Emailing resume - cover letter

I have the email address of the person I need to contact and send my resume to.

Question - Should the cover letter be the email itself or should it be attached to the email? Or both?

I've never really bothered with a cover letter. If I send via email I'll put a bit of info in the body but that is it.

I always write a cover letter in the email, and attach my resume. It gives you a chance to point out a few ways you might be a good fit for the job.

That's kind of how I'm thinking about it. The email itself would serve as the cover letter expressing your interest and how you would fit the position. Seems a little strange to attach a separate cover letter, however, I do see examples of people doing that. In the interest of time and the need for a one page resume, giving the hiring manager more to read doesn't seem logical to me.
