Kindof a Double Post - This one's a 3524

Although I know it's not necessary for CCNA, I plan on plunging right into CCNP, so I understand a 3500 switch is necessary.

What do you guys think of this Cisco Catalyst 3524-XL-EN （WS-C3524-XL-EN）? It comes with 2 gigbit ethernet modules, but no cables are any thing else, just the box with the modules. Current price is just over the equivalent of 200 US dollars with one day left on the auction.

A 2950 would be just a good, but for the current price I'd buy it even if I didn't need one

No, I let it slip out of my hands.

But, actually, I also kindof held back because I am sure what the models numbers actually mean.

For example, I figured out that a 3512 means a 3500 series with 12 ports, and a 3524 means a 3500 series with 24 ports. So, what does the 3550 mean? Does it make any difference to us for use in a lab?

Plus, those GBICs don't seem to increase the value by too much. So, I didn't want to buy something on impulse.

3512 - 3500 switch with 12 ports
3524 - 3500 switch with 24 ports
3550 - Layer 2 and Layer 3 "routing" switch that can have 12, 24, or 48 ports. 3550s are pretty expensive so I wouldnt invest in these unless you get one for under 1000 US dollars. If you do get one for that price... I would re-sale it to make a profit to get other routers or switches.

The same goes for 2900 series... there are the 2912, 2924, 2950 (different set of commands and Enterprise use) but the 2950 comes in 2950-12, 2950-24, and 2950-48.

There are a handful of 2950s - 12 and 24 ports with current software for between 200-400 dollars and a couple of 3550s with current software for about 400 dollars.

There is a brand new 2950 for 800 dollars and a brand new 3550 for 2300, but that's too much and who needs new, right?

hmm.... I wonder if I should start an export business to the US?

Honestly... you need to verify that you are able to pick up a 3550 for that amount. I have seen starting amounts that much but these days you will not see it go for less than 1400 dollars. I admit... I got lucky on my purchases of 1160 and 1075 but I have immediate plans to sell them back for the 1400+ range.

800 is a bit too much for a regular switch. A strong recommendation is to stick with a couple of 2950s and that is all you will need unless you want to invest into a "CCIE" lab.

I hear you man, but the auction thing really isn't so popular here in Japan.
Actually the internet itself isn't that popular here in Japan.

If the price is only 400 dollars with only a day left, it will close at less than 500 dollars guaranteed.

And you may have misread part of my post, but only the brand new 2950 was offered with an minimum opening bid of 800 dollars.
Anyway, so far no offers on that.

Export to Europe while your at it, I'd be one of your first customers with those prices on a 29xx
