Afternoon Ladies and Gents,

So I work at a company right now where I get shifted around avg every 1.5 years to a new spot and been looking to leave now to work more in network administration again (my passion).

I got a call last night from a previous site I was assigned to and asked if we could speak in confidence by their senior director. I have a good relationship with her and agreed. They want to drop my company as their on-site support and asked if I would consider coming back. It would be 9 - 5 M to F with 24/7 support (did it before). I would work for their company and give me 18% over what I make now plus benefits and such.

I'd be back to managing a large series of Cisco products alone and 1200 residential users and I always look at a job as it is what you make it so I could learn grow and get my CCNP easily with the hands on.

What do you all think? Money wise it is a very good bump for me and contractually I am in the clear (triple checked) if they did that .........but something just... feels like it will end badly with this. I told the director I would have to think about it and speak to my wife as this affects her as much as me.

The biggest things to double-check are non-compete clauses in your offer letter. Most jobs I've taken have them. Now, if you're sure that you're contractually in the clear, then I say go for it.

It sounds like work that you'd be excited to do, but you're nervous about taking that risk (very understandable). I recently changed positions, changed industries, moved across the country, and accepted a job because I thought I would like it more. It was a pretty huge risk. It was also gut-wrenching. As it turns out, the new job sucks. However, I'm much happier with the location than I was previously, and overall I think the move was worth it.

It'll be really hard to find what you really want, and to meet your career goals, without stepping out on a ledge a few times (and probably falling off it more often than not).

So... What makes you the most nervous about it? Just a gut instinct? Having to work it basically alone?

No problems working along or even the fear of the job as I did the exact job they asking for over a year and a half for that company. I was moved then to a new site.

I somehow have a bad gut feeling that somehow my current company will come back and take it out against me in some way even though contractually they can't. Like I said contractually it says I can't work for a company once hired after x time and I am well past x time.

If your company doesn't have a non-compete clause or policy you've agreed to, I would say to go for it!

The worst case is you have to explain the situation to future employers.

Verify it does not have verbiage akin to "for the duration of your employment at 'X' company and 'Y' year(s) after termination of employment."

I have had great results at recent positions discussing these items with my immediate supervisors at previous companies. You'd definitely want to take care doing that, as it can be a very risky move if you don't trust the person to have your best interest at heart.

If you want to post the verbiage of your non-compete on here, taking out any specifics, you may get some forum-review advice from a broad spectrum of professionals, but I honestly think you're probably in the clear.

When in doubt have a lawyer look it over. If he says your in the clear then you at least have a leg to stand on when your old company sues you. Unless the company you are with are really cool about poaching clients then I would get a lawyer to check out the contract you signed and expect to get a summons for stealing their client. Not to be a downer but that is the scenario I see.

Not being a downer at all. That is the feeling I am getting and that is why I asked.
I know there are more positions out there but figured I'd inquire see what others saw outside my point of view.
I also figure they would bring up the fact if they found out I transitioned there that they would say "If you knew we were losing the client ahead of time why didn't you tell us so we could try to save our relationship with them."

So I guess tonight I will go back to hitting Indeed, Dice, SimplyHired, etc and see what else I can apply to that interests me.
