First IT job!

Just landed my first (employed) IT job about 3 weeks ago! I'm in my second year of college, pursuing a degree in cyber security as well as certs. I've done PC repair for about the last two years on my own, but as of a few weeks ago, I landed a paid internship with my school as a computer technician. The pay is atrocious, but the resume experience is what I'm most excited about. I work with the sr. techs as well as the director of networking and the CISO.

I'm excited for the opportunities that it will open up for me. Just thought I'd share

Congratulations! I am a bit torn between my first IT job being entry-level networking or paid internship. May I ask what helped you to decide to go with the internship?

Thats the plan. I'm trying to get close to the CISO.

Hey! sorry i didn't see you reply sooner!
I'm definitely one of the younger college students. I skipped a grade in high school, so I started college before i was even 18. I don't have too much real world experience other than working in landscaping and fast food for brief periods of time. I have the knowledge for more advanced jobs, but i don't have the resume for them. I had professors recommending me for some rather advanced positions, but I don't want to be working full time with the school workload I have at the moment. The internship was completely perfect for me because its at my school, so I save on gas, and they work around my school schedule. Its really good experience, I'm not expected to have all the answers (at least from my bosses. Users are a different story.. ha), and i've already made some really nice connections. Another thing that I found out after I got the job is that every IT employee at the school actually started in my position, and has just been promoted up. All the way up the ladder to the CIO. That gives me quite a bit of hope for the future.
I see that you just started at WGU for security (good luck btw!). When it comes to security, networking will be the easiest way to get your foot in the door, IMO. I would take into consideration the pay, the work load for both work and school together, and definitely the opportunities the both will provide.

Congrats and soak up that experience. That is how I got my start as well. That formative experience is very valuable. At this stage, it's not about the pay. That will come in time with patience and hard work.
