Director of VP level manager

I am running into an issue finding positions that fit my skill set. Currently Director of Technology for a small software development company in the Midwest and am looking to move on to the next position in my career. Below is a rundown of my positions/current salary.

2011-current Director of Technology small(20ish) person development company
2010-2011 Help desk manager (midsize academic setting) contract
2007-2010 SR. Technician(large fortune 500)

Currently make between 60-70 and supposed to have a quarterly bonus of 10% so I should be able to hit around 80 total, but the business isn't selling as much as it should so no bonus for me. I have seen many positions outside of the city I am in, but it is hard to start landing interviews for some reason outside of the general area I am in. Should I be contacting recruiters, stay put a bit longer, take up a couple certs? Any info would be much appreciated.

How far are you from Chicago?

If you are going for Director or VP level positions there shouldn't be any issue with getting interviews outside of the city. These are definitely the types of roles people are brought in from out of town for.

Unless you've got some kind of remarkable resume exec recruiters wouldn't necessarily be knocking your door down (based on what you've posted). I'm assuming you have far more experience than that (that's not even 10 years of experience much less management experience). You'll be up against guys with m.sc/phd and 20+ years of networking in that city.

I am a couple hours away from Chicago and I do have more experience than that, but just wanted to put the last 5 years or so.

Management is one role where titles at small and large companies differ. VPs at small companies are often in charge of similar workforces and make similar wages as directors at large companies. If you're looking at large companies, keep in mind what you really have is 2 years of experience managing 20 people and 3 years managing at all. Thus, it's highly unlikely you would qualify to be a director at a large company. First- or second-level management would be more appropriate.

What type of companies are you targeting? As others have mentioned, your experience and current title may not fit with larger organizations. Also, your current salary isn't that of a Director or VP either. No offence intended, but at my employer, your description of experience and salary woud align with a senior team lead or line-manager role.

Titles are kinda weird so perhaps you may want to consider conducting your search based on your experience level instead. Banks for example, call everyone a VP or AVP. A VP level at a bank is a managing director.

I worked at Chase Bank, we had banker's with the title of VP, they are just thrown around in the banking industry now. Not really having any significant meaning.

Where I work, VP is top level management, but my company is a small private company. So like paul78 states, sometimes these titles don't hold much weight.

Is it that you arent getting call backs or that you arent landing interviews(or both)? I think you probably should start with improving your resume. Also, get on linked in and get into some groups both local and having to do with your skill set and do some networking. If there are any tech meetups(meetup.com) in your area check those out. The higher up you go, the more necessary networking will be needed. Alot of times you dont see very high level positions listed as they are filled by someone via networking and such.
