Hey guys, I feel like I know the answer to this but input from other people is helpful. Currently, I like my job, it has a lot of responsibility, not a lot of oversight, freedom, and I get to touch all the technologies, make all the decisions, etc. I had been planning to leave at some point but I keep getting small raises every time I'm about to start looking, and so never do. I finally decided, I'll stop looking around and stay put until I have my Bachelors from WGU. Problem is, I don't really make very much. Some of the jobs I see listed are anywhere from $5-$10K more per year on the low end of the salary ranges, and I am totally qualified to do them. Am I crazy to not want to abandon my current employer? They are good to me, salary just isn't what it could be because I started from mail boy and ended up the IT admin.

Depends how many years you have invested in the company. If its more then a few years it might be time to move on.

Find a way to bring it up with your boss that you feel you are being paid below market rate. Finish up for you MCITP:EA and establish that as a personal deadline, if things haven't changed by then it's time to go.

You aren't crazy for wanting to stay put because you are conformable. Most people don't like leaving a conform zone and the known for the unknown even if there is a benefit you are seeking.

That's about spot on for the area. I'm about 10K under the low end.

I switched away from the MCITP because it was just too hard to finish in a school format (WGU). I might pursue again after finishing my Bachelor's, I'm not sure. It's funny because I just don't see what incentive they would have to pay me 10k more a year for something I'm already doing. I think that's why a lot of people end up job hopping.

Good point, yes, quite a few years. It's given me opportunities I would not have gotten somewhere else, but darn it, it always comes back to money right?

I work at a service desk and make close to 50k and not even a system admin, however if i transition into an msp role, which i want to do i'll probably loose a couple grand but thats ok with me

I'd talk to your boss, but firstly make sure you already have offers to cover yourself

It really cant hurt to look and at the end of the day, you need to do whats best for your career. I know they treat you great, however, there are likely many opportunities that will also treat you great, while allowing you to better grow your skillset, and be paid better. Throw your resume out there and see what happens. If you get a great offer, then make your decision. But there is no downside to looking. However not looking means you may miss a huge opportunity.
