Strung along waiting for nothing, are they wrong?

I applied for a job and was contacted. We set up an interview. Interview went well IMHO and they said they were wanting to hire four people and wanted to start us at the same time. A week later they called me and asked me which shift I would like. They were going to do the background checks and wanted to have what they needed for HR once the checks came back. Three weeks go by I didn't hear anything, so I left a voice mail. One more week passes and no call. I decide to check with the background company and they tell me no background check was requested on me. I emailed the company and get a reply back shortly after. They say they thought they included me in on an email. They filled the position internally and are not looking for anymore techs ATT.
I thought there was four positions? These positions were very near entry level, they wanted one year experience but was paying as if they wanted even less than that.
Anyways, seems very unprofessional to me. I was supposed to be good to go once the background came back. They decide to not do that, hire within and forget all about me and maybe the other three people, if they even existed. They said they would consider me for a future job. Sure, but my attitude will be different, I can guarantee that.

It happens. Things change, people get busy and perhaps forget to let you know. Nothing you can do now but move on to the next one.

Until you have a signed contract, always keep looking. If you decided to wait around before they committed to hiring you, that was a mistake on your part you can and should learn from. They obviously kept looking.

Exactly what networker said. Just keep going forward. It isn't worth stewing over (trust me I had to learn this the hard way for my current job). Just keep going forward and look as the next position to be better than the last one.

Remember this is all just business and nothing personal.

I've had a somewhat similar experience... I had applied for a job and was granted a few interviews - everyone seemed to like me, and the job seemed like a great fit. I was told that an offer letter was forthcoming, so I was pretty excited. In advance of that, the HR department called to gather information and asked me about my clearance. When I told them that it had been adjudicated by OPM and not DoD, they basically dropped me. I asked them why and they said it would be too much of a hassle to get the clearance recognized by DoD. So that was pretty aggravating. But, it all worked out in the end - I kept applying and am now in my current position, which has provided me with invaluable experience and insight.

I had a recruiter call me last week and tell me they had an interview lined up for a Network Engineering gig in Raleigh, NC (About an hour away from me). So I took PTO, ironed my clothes shaved and hit the road, half way there I get a call from the Tech recruiter....Hiring manage says you don't have enough experience......

Ah yes, I've run into that a couple of times recently. I interview with the recruiter and then get set up for interviews with the hiring managers, only to be told the hiring manager loves my resume but I don't have enough experience in XXXXXX. Thankfully it wasn't the late notice that you received.

Surprisingly enough it was a recruiting company I have had good workings with. I was shocked, it was the last PTO I had.

I'm having a similar experience with a very big and reputable company that I would have never expected it from. It happens..on to the next one!

Keep hunting until the paperwork is complete. I had one opportunity a few years back that I had interviewed and everything, they offered the job did background and all and was supposed to report Monday for indoc (had given notice at non-IT job already) got email on Friday saying they were told by corporate they weren't going to staff that position and they were already on a hiring freeze. Left with nothing but the choice of whether t go beg for old job back or get another.

I've seen this happen to family members, in high level positions, even after signing paperwork. I would continue to apply and go on interviews until your first day of work. At worst, you get more experience with the interviewing process. Who knows, you might even find a better position while the other company is dragging their feet.

Thanks all, this little bit of venting and your responses was all I needed.
I've been spending most of my time studying for the CCNA, I'm getting very close. Originally I was going to start applying for jobs once I have the CCNA but I glanced at job listings and saw the one mentioned and applied. Looking and applying for jobs takes some time away from studying so I think I can wait the three weeks or so and then look for jobs with the CCNA on my resume.

Ya the impression I get from some employers is since your the one looking for the job they could care less being courteous ,getting back to you, being honest, or keeping their word about anything. I have had to call and bug many times when I have been told by recruiters of a possible job and "they would get back with me soon" a couple days go by and it gets very aggravating. I have to call and bug to find out either the recruiter completely forgot about me or the position was already filled. Growing up I was told to keep my word, if I said I was going to do something then I better do it or my word was nothing and in my family that meant losing all respect. Fidelity and keeping your word was everything. So due to the family culture I grew up in when people tell me they are going to do something and they don't I seem to loose all respect for them as a person. Another thing I don't tolerate well is lying. I have been flat out lied to in preliminary screenings pertaining to salary, benefits, term of contract etc. There were many times I completely lost all respect for the company and the people I talked to before I even got the rejection letter.

I try not to get my hopes up when a 3rd party recruiters solicits me. If I wasn't unemployed I wouldn't even waste my time.
