I'm currently enrolled in the APU Information Systems Security program. And so far, I hate it. I guess I'm just finding out that security isn't for me. The curriculum is almost entirely based on theory, and there's nothing for me to really "do". I'm not in a position where I can really practice the stuff I'm learning on a daily basis, so it's not sticking. Plus, quite frankly, the subject just doesn't interest me.
So I'm wanting to switch my degree path up. Unfortunately, this leaves me at a crossroads.
I've always been interested in web development. Did some self training for a bit, but got distracted by life. In addition, I've wanted to learn how to program for some time now, but always felt intimidated, so I never started.
I guess this all adds up to me changing to a more software/web development degree focus.
But where should I pursue this next step of my educational journey?
APU offers some IT degrees, much of which can be tailored to focus on Web and Software development. Has an opinion been formed on APU around these parts?
WGU also comes to mind, but after a response in the WGU Student Experiences thread, I'm leery about attending, since I will be a true beginner in the programming world.
Is there another online school that has a great reputation that offers Web Development/Software development programs?
And finally, how important are Certs for Web and Software development? One of my biggest draws to WGU is that I can tackle both my degree and certs at the same time. But if Certs aren't needed, then I won't consider them in my decision making process.
I know that's a lot, but any help will be greatly appreciated. My semester is coming close to an end at APU, so I need to make a decision quicly.
Thanks.
edit- Btw, here's APU's IT program link. There's a focus on Web Development using .Net, but I'm not sure how useful that would be in today's web.
