what are the best I.T companies to work for?

Hows tiger direct? Best buys geek squad? Am telling about work environment and pay rate?

Currently work at a hospital and only once did I see a help desk opening but I felt that I didnt have enough experience for it. Am working on my a plus and wondering where can I apply to?

From the Geek Squad folks I know, they say run. You're more than glorified cashiers and your skills will suffer. Here's some advice (and I know I might get flamed for this): get your CompTIA trifecta - A+, Net+ and Security+. Get some work through a place like WorkMarket and do some side jobs for experience and then try to move up. It's how I did it, and now I do work from home tech support for a legit company (don't ask, I don't kiss and tell).

Tiger Direct, I wouldn't consider an IT position, unless you can work at their HQ or Warehouse in an actual IT position otherwise it is just sales. Geek Squad requires at least an A+, even if you have no experience and is REALLy basic computer repair work (I did this many years ago when I was 17).

These positions are considered more Retail. Look For possible volunteer/intern positions, you have to get your foot in the door and some experience before you can worry about pay rates.

Also, don't rule out positions because of your lack of experience, go ahead and apply. Granted I wouldn't apply for any senior level positions. If you don't get a response, no harm no foul, but you never know it could possibly be an entry-level position and if you interview really well you could get the position.

Calling Geeksquad "IT" is just way too generous for my tastes. Bestbuy is retail so they are retail in my eyes.

The REAL GeekSquad folks work in certain parts of the company, specifically the service centers and certain geographic locations like near corporate HQ. The store workers are basically glorified sales people with the title of Geek, which is why the quality of support service in the stores is so bad for the most part. I was the only one in the whole outfit who actually had IT certs when I worked there. Some stores do have relatively compatent and trained Agents, but those are few and far between in the company.

Seriously? Did you mean the worst IT companies? If one can consider BestBuy or Geek Squad an IT company, that is.

Four years ago at this same hospital I got a golden opportunity to volunteer at the I.t. dept through some connections. I only went for 6 weeks and damn I should of stayed for another 6 weeks. I got lazy going and stopped but I definitely liked the feel of the job. I was about 21 and immature and didnt see such a great chance I was given. A yr later I applied and got hired by the samw connections.

These last three years I been a sterile instruments tech getting paid minimum wage. For the last four months I been studying my A+ and taking the 701 this thursday and 702 the 27th.

I once saw a help desk opening but felt incompetent so I didnt apply.

Feeling incompetent and being incompetent are 2 different things. It sounds to me like perhaps you lack a little self-confidence. My suggestion - if you see an entry-level IT job (doesn't have to be helpdesk), apply for it. Entry-level doesn't always imply helpdesk. There are many administrative and support IT roles out there.

I know that it can be hard and discouraging but try to let the person reviewing your resume and interviewing you decide if you are able to do the job. Don't decide for them by not applying for the job.

Just my 2 cents but if you are looking to get your foot into IT, perhaps don't worry too much about the best IT company and just apply to whatever entry-level IT job you find. When I was first starting out, I applied to every single entry-level IT job in a 50 mile radius of where I lived.

i am starting to have the opinion that everyone should get some help desk experience..

I'm also starting to think large companies are where it's at. I used to work for a medium sized company, and it was cool. But it was almost impossible to get equipment. I now work for a HUGE company, and they order laptops like it's nothing.
