Subnetting Question

To all of you who have taken the Security+ exam,

Has anyone actually received a question on subnetting? As in calculations on the number of hosts with a given subnet mask?

    Nope.

    No subnetting questions.

Make sure you have mastered Cryptography and also remember the abbreviations!! They abbreviate everything!!!

    Good Luck!!

    No sub netting questions
    Mostly problem solving questions
After taking the test I can see why they suggest 2 years experience

    Good luck!!!

Cryptography is my biggest weakness. I thought it was only worth 11%. icon_sad.gif

I sincerely doubt you'll see a question that requires you to calculate the number of hosts. However, you might see a question related to subnetting and availability. It seems to be rare, but is possible.

Specifically, if a computer is assigned an IP address with the wrong network ID, it won't be available on the network. Here's a simple example without subnetting:

A network has a default gateway of 192.168.1.1/24. Of the following choices, what IP address is NOT valid in this network?

    A. 192.168.1.110
    B. 192.168.11.11
    C. 192.168.1.111
    D. 192.168.1.113

The default gateway has a network ID of 192.168.1.0/24 and answers A, C, and D all have a network ID of 192.168.1.0/24. B has a network ID of 192.168.11.0/24 and will not operate on this network.

Similarly, which two of the following IPs are on the same subnet?
    192.168.1.50/26
    192.168.1.100/26
    192.168.1.165/26
    192.168.1.189/26

To answer this correctly, you need to understand subnetting even if you don't need to calculate the number of hosts on the subnet.

Actually, you're correct that is only worth 11%. However, if you every cryptography question looks foreign, it seems like you're getting more than just 11% of the questions related to cryptography.

The good news is that you don't have to know cryptography in-depth.

    Good luck.
