Book recommendations for new IT students

Hi everyone,
Next year I plan to start college to pursue an IT degree. I have prior college experience/credits as an accounting major, which didn't work out and ended with me joining the military. I've matured a lot/become more motivated during my years in the military and want to get a head start on the IT courses. I plan to apply soon to NJIT, Kean, and NJCU (if you guys know any other universities in NJ that have good IT programs, I'm open to recommendations).

Anyways, can anyone recommend me a good book to get me started? I have a very basic understanding of computers, but am willing to put in the time to learn.

What avenue of computers most interest you? You will come to find out that IT is vast and full of detailed specialities. I believe a good place to start is with desktop/laptop hardware. Then learn about major operating systems (windows,mac,linux,perhaps mobile OSes) then expand to networking and security and so on.

I actually wanted a book that would give me an overview of avenues i could potential take with an IT degree. As I am new to this, i wanted to read up on each avenue and make a decision from there.
