How many Network Outages does your company experience?

Hey Guys,

I recently just got my first IT job for a major city government (30k employees and users). I've noticed that we experience about 1-2 city wide network outages on average per week. The outages last between 5-15 mins. Luckily, I am not part of the Networking Team and don't have to deal with this old POS Network. This has been going on steadily, ever since I got hired three months back.

This begs the questions; How often does your company experience Network Outages? And what caused it to go out? How many users were affected?

Probably at least 1 remote site per month, but they are usually squirrel or power related. Our network is pretty reliable otherwise.

None. Full redundancy and High Availability for true 99.999% uptime/year on all communications paths. Even if an entire data center were nuked the others would pick up the traffic. A true SEV1 would be somebody else upstream kicking out the plug.

It depends on what your talking about going down... Internet connectivity, email, applications, remote servers, etc...I would say overall we have very few unexpected outages, but we do have quite a few planned outrages for maintenance/patching.

I would also note that the type of business, network topology, technology used (routers switches, servers), protocols, and number of locations also dictates frequency of outages.

Lastly, if you have a crappy ISP and vendor support this can compound the issue.

per WEEK! My superiors would cut my head clean off my shoulders. We used to have outages 1x per month (which I thought wasn't too bad for the gear I used) for 2-5 minutes. I told them if they want five nines then they'll have to give me a budget to match. They threw the cash, I optimized the core. Now we're doing great.

I don't mean our remote sites, those are all managed by Verizon. Those go down a LOT!! I meant our main network, the one that connects all our servers.

Meaning when it goes down, we lose EVERYTHING. Its almost comical when it does.
