Hey guys, I found this site when checking out the WGU Alumni site. You can apply for a bunch of different IT jobs in the intelligence community. I was just curious if anyone has ever applied through them or maybe have an experience to share when trying to get a job in intelligence?

The security clearance process is something to work on.

If I remember right, intelligence.gov redirects you to the careers page of the various agencies that make up the IC...

But as a heads up, most government agencies are in a hiring freeze right now - you'll have better luck going the contractor route.

My future father in law has high security clearance working for the feds - just finished up furlough fridays

I doubt I'll be qualified for any intelligence positions for quite some time. If I do decide to pursue this in the future, should I be working on obtaining a proper security clearance in the mean time? Or is that a process that occurs during/after the hiring process?

Also, hypothetically speaking of course

, if one had been convicted of a D-Felony marijuana possession 10+ years ago, how would that affect trying to get proper security clearance for that particular individual?

Your probably better off getting in under the student programs that may of those agencies have. And yes, there are those wonderful furloughs to deal with. Keep in mind Clearances, they do take some time to process. You can't get your clearance on your own, the company you get hired on to will do that for you and process the paperwork..which is lengthy. Background checks, finance checks and even more checks depending on your clearance will happen.

If you even have a slight ding on your credit report it can be hard to get a security clearance.

@ehnde - I forgot about your credit effecting trying to obtain SC, but I think I should be okay in regards to this.

Be completely honest throughout the process and you'll be fine. Plenty of time has passed and if you've been good since then, that should not be a factor. You run into issues when you a) have had recent or repeated problems (getting in trouble multiple times for the same thing, etc), and b) withhold information.

Cool - For those internships, you would have to be fresh outta college with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They want kids and pay them $45-50K to start.

Another thought...I would say try the contractor route, as you can get a start with your Secret, and eventually work you way up. Find a job that will get you a TS/SCI or higher. If you get to that point a lot of companies want ppl with those high clearances coming in the front door when you apply.

With your record, enough time as passed, as long as you don't have any outstanding debt, and a clean record it shouldn't be too hard.

Thanks guys (and gals!), you really helped to relieve a lot of my concern about getting clearance with my record. It is nice to know that I have this option available if I choose to pursue these types of positions later in life.

@ kiki162 - I will graduate in a year or so with around a 3.5 GPA. Is starting out (interning) at $45-50k considered low compared to similar internships in the private sector or contracting? Or would people advise to skip interning and try and land a solid position right out the gate? Keep in mind I have 0 work experience on record.
