When I thought life couldn't kick me harder, I lose my job.

I have been working for an Apple Service Provider for the last 2 months. I initially had applied for the service position, but another person with basically the same qualifications as me got hired instead. They offered me a front desk/software support/teaching position paying $10/hr and I took it since I really needed a job, and figured that this would be great experience on my resume. I also reached "Apple Product Professional" status within a week, so it seemed promising.

Well, this Friday is my last day. They laid me off the previous week with the reason that sales have been pretty low, and that they can't justify having me on right now.

Just when I thought things were lining up for me, life kicks me in the balls. I have my 3 month old son to support and this has just set me back so much further. My plan was to work here for 6 months to a year or so until I finished my CCNA and could move on to another company, but now I have no income. I also feel like this experience won't do much on my resume considering how short it is.

In a way, I'm glad to be out of here because these people treated me like I was a complete idiot and never let me help out with anything revolving service or anything like that. Sorry for the rant, but honestly this has me more depressed than I can imagine.

Sorry to hear that you are taking it on the chin... but you gotta get that resume polished (a lot of people here can help with that), and get it in front of people. I know it sucks, but wallowing in it may feel good now, but you have GOT to keep moving forward. Since you seem to be familar with Apple products, look at starting a side business showing people how to use their technology... JAT. (just a thought)

Check for job posting with your local school system, hospitals, get a linked profile, etc. Start applying for jobs now, don't wait!

When I graduated from college I applied for something like 37 IT jobs in 2 weeks. Can you beat that number? You've got A+ and that is all you need to work at a Service Desk supporting users. I work at a Hospital and our Service Desk people start at around $17/hour in a medium sized city.

It might not seem like it now, but they did you a favor by letting you go. Now you can go get a much better job. Get motivated!!

Thanks for the motivation guys. I've always been the type of person to get discouraged easily, but I am definitely not giving up.

I already have a LinkedIn profile as well as profiles on all the major job engines. So, hopefully I will get into a new position soon. You are right though, this place was not worth making anything long-term anyways. For now I can rely on my small side business doing repairs, and managed IT services. As for my resume, I'd love to get some criticism on it. I'll start a thread and ask for opinions on it.

Thank you again, definitely helps me see the light at the end of the tunnel a bit better.

Note: I can understand if you feel the need to separate your forum identity from your real-life identity.

In my case, the only way I could keep them separate would be to not have a forum identity. (This is based on my own experience, and yours might vary.)

Definitely work on the Certs. This will help past the time by as you work towards your CCNA.

Just think of it as some time off to advance quicker. That CCNA that was going to take you months before should be able to be accomplished in a week or two now that you can devote all your time to it.

Additionally make sure your resume and LinkedIn are 100% perfect to start making some new connections with!

Personally if I ever lose my job I'll be using the time, that I can't find currently, to build out a larger scale lab environment with production-ready up time.

Just make sure you update your resume on all the job ad sites. Whenever you update your profile/resume, it actually pushes you up to the top of the search results. So if you put some time into your resume and get it updated before Friday, you'll probably be able to line up interviews for next week.

Additionally, I agree w/ what Akaricloud said. The CCNA could have taken you months while working fulltime. I think you should use the extra time and work on finishing that. You might be able to bang it out within mere weeks (even days!) now.

Sorry to hear, that's a bum deal.... keep your head held high, and know that you're not alone... It happens to the best of us. If you're looking for immediate work, you may want to look at getting your resume out to 3rd party IT hiring agencies like TCML, Apex, Adventage Tech, K-force, to name a few. Most offer temp to hire type positions and will work to get you an interview.

I got laid off with nearly 30 others back in mid June, and i did EXACTLY that.
Honestly, OP, this was the best thing to happen to me at the time it did. Had been there 9yrs, then surprise perp-walked. Losing the income sucked a$$, but reverse that whip and use it to your advantage

I know it seems terrible now but like others have said they did you a favor. 10/hr isn't much (not sure where you live but most places that isn't going to pay the bills) and you could do so much better! Just put your resume out there and keep trying. I put out close to 30 resumes in a few weeks and I only got a call back once. BUT with that one call back I have done four interviews with the company and I am supposedly doing my final interview next week. I hope to be working here soon. I have been unemployed for almost two months now and it was getting kind of scary to tell you the truth although I am sure there are people out there that had to wait much longer.

BOTTOM LINE: You CAN do it! You will find the right job just when you least expect it! Don't give up!

Keep your head up no matter what. You go on to survival mode. You have a lot more at stake than I did 12 years ago. I was not making enough money and could not pay the bills including the house note at the time. I took a job for minimum wage at the time, 6 months of hard work paid off with a 2.35 raise at the time. That was pretty big for me. The other day my dad told me something that made me very proud of who I had become. I had borrowed from him one time but ended up not cashing the check when I did borrow it. My dad said what made him proud was that I worked hard and went out and did it, he never worried about me making it. I did what I had to then. I will be doing the same if I find out wife is pregnant. I hope to find that out tomorrow. Your right Jessica, it took my wife over a year to find her current job. Its rough but it can be done. Remember the old saying "When one door closes another one opens up". Good luck Jessica and Soliton.

Thank you all for the support, that's why I'm in love with this forum. Helped me feel much better and confident.

You are all right though, I took this job because it paid something and because it would be experience, but I have mainly looking for $16/hr and up.

I actually spoke with the owner today(normally works at the other location) and thanked him for the opportunity and that I enjoyed the time here. He offered a recommendation whenever I need it, and so did a senior salesperson here, so that alone is great because I didn't really have any professional references.

As for the CCNA, I'm definitely hitting it full force after my last day tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be certified very soon. I just finished up Subnetting, so not very much left for the ICND1.

I'm in the Lehigh Valley. I never really tried to look further than 20 miles or so from here because I figured the positions I would get wouldn't pay enough to make it worthwhile, but I think that I shouldn't be so quick to dismiss those chances.

Get your resume out to some of the major recruiting firms (TEKSystems, Robert Half, etc). Look on Indeed.com, CraigsList, etc.
