Hey guys I am looking at doing ccna sec. And have a few question about hardware I have an 1841 that I got from work over a year ago. Would that be good enough for ccna sec and if so what iOS image would I need Also I would prefer to use hardware and not gns3.

Does it have an IOS already on it? Check out this site for information on IOS images and make sure whatever image you do have supports the CCNA Sec topics Cisco Feature Navigator - Cisco Systems

yes, this is the router that I intend on using for ccna sec. Assuming it comes with the appropriate image and memory amounts you should have access to all of the security features and CCP support.

I didn't want to buy an ASA in till ccnp security, do you think just one 1841 will be ok for ccna security or just suck it up and buy a used asa 5505 ?

GNS3 blows for ASA, you can get by with GNS3 for your NA but forget about it for your NP FIREWALL/IPS exams.

middle of the night because of a network problem and had to figure out the
traffic flows in your network while you were half asleep, could you do it?

An 1841 is what I used. Technically, a lower end 2600XM (with appropriate RAM) model works just fine as well. But since you didn't have to buy it, all is well.

Don't waste your money, GNS3 for your NA Security

I run an ASA in GNS3 at work for our test environment. I know nothing about the content of the NP FIREWALL exam, but what exactly is the limitation there?

My understanding is that the 2600XM's do not support CCP. Am I incorrect?

Again, for NA you can get by with GNS3. You don't need an IPS, you will just learn IPS/IDS concepts, CBAC with your routers. CCP, no ASA or ASDM

Active/Active, or any form of HA is pretty much impossible. Its just buggy

Ok so I decided not to get the ASA just yet and wait till ccnp sec. My current 1841 only had 128mb of ram and a 32mb compact flash. So I order 256mb of ram and 256mb compact flash off of eBay. Should I buy an aim card for this router or will 12.4 IOS with advance enterprise be good enough ?
