The retail hours were extremely flexible and allowed me knock out several classes in my first term. I'm sure you can accomplish the same with ease. I will say this, many people/companies think GS is a joke. Just make sure when you leave GS you know your stuff. It's so easy to become a AJU monkey and miss out on opportunities to learn new things. Lastly, once you've done your one year bid with GS, start sending out those resumes.
thx for your reply...
my concern is whether GS on resume after done WGU looks better than business ownership (I was one man army). I think GS can give me very little as far as experience goes although anything new is always welcome. I dealt with disgruntled customers, SOHO, hardware / software repairs, blah blah.. I love the idea of discounts on some HW and staying current while studying. Your thoughts? -
MagnumOpus Member Posts: 107It couldn't hurt to add GS to your resume. It's the experience that matters.

MagnumOpus Member Posts: 107Hey it's been awhile and I think this thread is worthy of an update. The last few months of working my Help Desk/Field Tech. job has been way better than expected. I guess you hear all the horror stories of working HD and honestly speaking, its not all that bad. Ideally, its not where I want to be a year from now, but it has been an great learning experience. I found working help desk is somewhat of the litmus test to your success in IT. I had the opportunity to strengthen my networking skills and learn a plethora of new things. It's been said time and time again before, "The HD is where you pay your dues." So true. WGU continues to catapult my career with every completed cert. and most importantly, forces me to explore new paths as I become more knowledgeable in my area of study.
Hope this helps and best of luck. -

The sole purpose of my updates is to somewhat chart the path of my IT career for those navigating the waters. Two months after my previous post, I finally landed a gig in Information Security. I worked the Helpdesk for two months, paid my dues (never want to work Helpdesk again) and landed a job as a Network Security Analyst shortly afterwards. Here is a brief overview of the last two years.
Quit Job In the Insurance Industry
> Joined Geek Squad (1 year) & enrolled at WGU
>Reached out to a Staffing agency for a HD Job (3months)
> Started my career as a Network Security Analyst & two classes away from graduation.
I've asked for advice and reached out to many of you on this board and I'm forever thankful for your direction. I started this path full of reluctance, but at some point I knew I had to take a leap of faith in a new direction. Nonetheless, Thank you all for time, patience and most importantly your guidance. It's been one hell of a ride over the last past two years, and I can't thank you guys enough for the push.
Forever grateful,

Congrats! I am hoping to get a entry Security position and get out of Help Desk as well. Maybe I need the CCNA to help me out. Did this job require security experience(at least in the job description)?2020 Goals: CCNA R&S, Cysa+, AZ103, Linux+, Pentest+ -

Thanks guys! Tmurphy, the Sec+ really opened the door for me and once I was in, it was a matter of proving I understood what I had studied. I didn't have the CCNA when I interviewed, but having one will be extremely beneficial as you will find yourself working with Cisco Adaptive Security Appliances (ASA's for short). As many have stated before , disregard the job description and apply. Took me a while to understand this notion of thinking. In short, the job description is a wish list and chances are if you show great promise, someone will bring you on. Hope this helps.:D -
