New job with the Air Force!

Applied for a special assignment about 6 months ago and found out recently that I was selected for it. Going to get a TS out of it and some awesome training! No increase in pay, but the experience will pay off tremendously in the long run! I hope =)

The unit i'm going to maintains a part of the DISN (Defense Information System Network) and deploys early entry communication packages.

If your interested, here is a little bit of what they do: Joint Communications Support Element

When I was active duty Air Force, one of my supervisors went JCSE. Very competitive to get into, IIRC.

Good job! Kudos on the clearance....hold on to that puppy, it will pay dividends...

I thought AFPC were the ones that choose who goes to JCSE from the mainstream Air Force?? My old supervisor is there and tells me how there are many people that didn't want to be part of the Unit but were selected for it anyways. They pretty much hate life due to all the PT they have to do and hate exercising. Lol I don't see how it is competitive when JCES doesn't Vet the troops they receive, select they people they want, or even have the Volunteers submit a package unlike JCU. Since it is up to AFPC to do the choosing for them, which I think it is lame that AFPC has the say in it all.

Congratz on the Assignment and good luck out there.

Yes some people don't have a choice in being there that is correct. That being said, a lot of people get there through their leadership recommending them or applying for it. And I love PT and want to go to all the Army schools so it is perfect for me.

"They pretty much hate life due to all the PT they have to do and hate exercising." Yes I understand it is the Air Force, but it is still the military. Where else can you get paid to work out on the job! Obese and out of shape people in the military irritate me. I say kick em out.

I am in the Reserve and was competing against 7 other reservists for one slot. (2 - 3 year mobilization) So it was competitive. JCU was my first choice, but they don't accept reservist applicants.

    Anyway thanks for the congrats!

Congrats!! Know a lot of Army Warrants from there (Active and Reserve). They were all high speed guys. You should have fun, especially learning how the other components do commo and such.

    Thanks Pysco, i'm pretty excited!

Just looked up your MOS, looks pretty cool. It's relatively new I assume? Looks similar to the Air Forces 1B AFSC.

You don't have to tell me twice, I was on a PRT and sold out to be a Personnel Security Augmentee with 11Bs for over a year long tasking. When I joined the Air Force as a Comm Troop, never thought I would be doing outside the wire missions, living with the Local Afghans and being treated/smoked like a Part-time grunt. Lol As much as it did suck, it was a great experiance and I would do it over again if I could, met people that ended up being my family for Life.

It makes a lot of sense now since you are in the Reserves and you had to compete for the unit unlike the Active Duty side. I'm actually in the middle of trying to retrain in becoming a 1B4, though I probably won't get it since I don't stack well against people that have a line number to become a NCO. If I don't get the 1B4 gig, mostly likely I will jump in the Reserves or Guard. I could use some advice in joining JCSE on the Reseves side, since I have been trying to join the unit ever since my old Supervisor got selected.

I'm Cyber Transport, originally a 2e2 when I first got in. I have experience with POTS/Voice systems, Networking, Client side devices+Configuration, Crypto (Both Phone and Networking), SIPRnet infrastructure, Long Haul Circuits, Equipment Accountability, and COMSEC + Info Assurance Training Officer.

Oh, I have a LOT of experiance with Physical Security and Personnel Protection thanks to my first tour. Lol

Yep, MOS 255S is relatively "new"; it's been around maybe 4 years now and have less than 80 of them in the entire Army (AD, Reserves and NG). Army is ramping up on cyber with a couple of new MOSs 25D, 35Q, and I think they are going to create a cyber Officer AOC also.

CCNT maybe you can answer this for me, what is the AF AFSC that does real Cyber? i.e. CNA/CND/CNE?

SephStorm, DOD and the Services in general use the word Cyber in a different context when it comes to terminology. For example, we all practice or the very least abide the Information Assurance realm within the 3D career fields. With those acronyms you gave me, 1B career field and other special duty assignments would focuses on Cyber Security. Mind you this isn't an AFSC that you can enter upon entry and that you have to retrain into the AFSC on your second term.

So annoying. Being prior service, If I wanted to come back, AF side, seems like a lot of hoops to jump through. Soo much bs... reminds me why I got out. Thanks. :)

Well if you want to come back on the reserve/guard route it is pretty easy for prior service. But to come back to active duty it is nearly impossible, unless you are in a critical field. Such as special forces, in some cases pilots, etc...

^^No truer words have been spoken. Lol

Everything Active Duty is a pain in the *** to get what you desire, you pretty much have NO control on what your career is going to be like and everything is based on Luck + the right timing. Lol At least in the Weekend warriors side, you have some flexibility and have some room to negotiate. If you are planning to get back in and want some options, the part route would be best. With all the budget cuts and becoming a Peacetime Service again, there is no need to keep people around which makes it just that much harder on the AD side.

I'm doing all I can to change things using the benefit as a FTA close to the end of his contract, thou I'm already setting options beyond the Service in motion just in case nothing falls into place. The fact that I don't have kids gives me the chance to take Risk, since I only can let down myself if I fail.

I'd have less of a problem with the reserves/guard side, but I don't think there are many opportunities near me, that I am interested in. Cyber/networking/or Fed LE (AFOSI/CID,ect). Its so difficult to tell what might be open without talking to a recruiter. AF is the best because they show you what is available at each base.

I'm assuming that you are talking about the Guard and the Reserves about that kinda of Information. Lol I have yet to meet a recuiter that was really informal about anything on the Active side... before I joined, I talked to the Army, AF and the Marines, all of them wanted me to signed as an MP even thou I scored high on my ASVAB. Lol

The only thing I got lucky with the Service is my AFSC but even that nowadays feels like a Bonus when I actually get to do the job... I think I would of benefit more if I was a Cop since I like doing escort missiona and going outside the wire. hahahaha CID is an awesome gig, I'm attached to NCIS, PSD Marines and from time to time we get the Army CID that support our us. I would love that job as well, but still not as entertaining when you get the PMCs who were all prior Special Forces, hearing thier stories as a bad *** makes my day. Lol
