Should a system/network administrator get ITIL certified or is it only something a project manager would need ?

ITIL is useful for all IT staff, even from Service Desk level upwards.

Companies are starting to adopt ITIL standards so I think it could only be a plus to at least get the foundation level ITIL.

Thank you for your answers. I've decided to get the ITIL Foundation certificate hopefully next year.

If I had time, I would get it.
    IT guy since 12/00

Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)
    Working on: RHCE/Ansible
Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands...

I'm planning on getting it, since it doesn't expire.

I worked on ITILv3 partly because I wanted to better understand IT from a business perspective. Originally got in to IT for the learning/fixing side of it, ITILv3 helped me better understand IT from a business perspective. Vital I think, but not everyone thinks so. The book is cheap, the information is good, and the test isn't terribly difficult. Definitely one I would recommend!

My boss sent me to a 3 day class for ITIL v3F when I first showed up because they had extra seats that had already been paid for. To me, it was very common sense material. I probably studied for a total of 45 minutes outside of the class (which wasn't very intensive) and passed easily. It could easily be knocked out in a long weekend. I've seen quite a few jobs that have it listed as a "preferred certification". It might be enough to put you above someone else when applying for jobs.

I've been job searching recently and see this asked for (not required) with plenty of jobs in my area. I wasn't sure what it was until I came across this thread and looked it up. Might be worth the time to get it.
