I am currently an IT engineer of coming on 6 Years experience and I have been thinking of going for the info sec path, either to pursue pen testing or digital forensics

All my experience is 1st to 3rd level tech support with a bit of desktop support and onsite cover.

I have 7 microsoft certifications as well as a BSC in computer science.

How should i pursue a security career? I have been within the infrastructure side of IT and I feel i need to learn more in general, such as networking, servers and virtualisation. But what should i do on the side for IT sec? is a masters degree needed?

I spoke to a friend who said to stay away from the CEH cert.
personally i think my next stop should be ccent/ccna path as this will cover the networking knowledge, may be then top up with a vcp or the hyper v exams to cover virtualisation and then possibly go for linux+

any advice guys?
