Question, this is an exam you pay for to be considered for a position? I have never heard of paying to apply for a job before. O_O

I'm surprised that NYC is instituting a new civil service exam when most other levels of government are getting rid of them...

Seems like a waste of money - for the government and for the applicant.

Some civil service jobs require a test and application fee (suppose to cover the cost of processing and testing). New Jersey still uses this system for some jobs. I tend to think it's a waste of money for the applicant, the government should come close to breaking even on it. That being said, how you can survive on $35k a year in NYC I do not know.

    hello,
I found this topic via google. I have about 5 years in the computer filed, does anyone if this exam is similar to the regular civic exams that just test your mental and logic reason or is this based on computing terms/knowledge? The last civil service exam i took, tested the reasoning and logical skills and noting related to the title or job position

@dmoore44 - I disagree with you totally. Civil service exams are a means by which an older potential entry-level IT worker like me can compete with younger candidates on a more-or-less level playing field - at least, prior to the interview.

@the_Grinch - it's a potential entry point into the IT field for me, after unsuccessfully trying for more than a year. The reason the pay is so low can be summed up in one word - Bloomberg. No employment contract has been signed since 2008, as the mayor refuses to even consider retroactive salary - I am a city worker and, as Bob Marley said, "he who feels it, knows it".

@shof515 - read the notice of examination - the exam will test knowledge of computers and associated peripherals, as well as customer service and reasoning ability.

does anyone have any idea what the turnaround would be? Like if you pass it, are you guaranteed in if you have the credentials and in how long will you be hired?

No guarantees in government and don't expect the turn around to be quick. My current job, I put in for in March and didn't get on till August (that is quick when it comes to the government). When I was with ICE, it took me over a year.

@danny069 - thanks! That is exactly what I plan to do! icon_lol.gif

@petagna2 - as the_Grinch said, there is no guarantee with the government. Your grade on the exam (plus veteran and other legacy credit) only determines your position in a civil service list. Whenever a position opens up, persons at the top of the list are called in for an interview - sometimes they conduct joint interview "pools" for multiple open positions at different city agencies.

@Ivanjam - Thanks for the info! I am schedule to take this exam on February 22, 2014 at Flushing. I wanted to know, after passing the exam how much longer does it take to get hired, as I am in desperate need of a job ?
  • IvanjamIvanjam Member Posts: 978 ■■■■□□□□□□
@sharwatchowdhury - I am taking the exam on Feb 22 too, but in Brooklyn. As the_Grinch said, nothing involving the Gov't is ever quick. Expect a list to be published about 3-6 months after the exam - only then will interviews start. In the meantime, check out support.com for jobs.
