General Question - How to proceed after this position

Hey Everyone!

I started my new job and, well, to put it bluntly it isn't what I expected it to be. I thought I would be part of the LAN/WAN team and I found out that actually I am working in the NOC but it is all networking which I am happy about. The thing is that it is well below my level of experience as I know how to do a lot of these things and when they described the position they asked if I knew BGP, MPLS, etc and the NOC doesn't even deal with that. I do have lots of time to study for my CCNP and figure maybe this is what I needed as I wasn't getting call backs on Network Engineer jobs and maybe I need this on my resume to show I am ready for that next position. Not to mention they offered my a lot of money to do this job and my last job was 10x the work and I was being paid less and had no time with my family. So I can support my family a LOT better which I am very happy about.

My question is where do I go from here? I plan on riding this out for a year to a year and a half then will move on to better opportunities with more experience. The thing I am just wondering is how to transition out of the NOC position to an engineering position? What can I do to strengthen my skills to make the next position easier to get? I am going to offer to take on all the extra work I can here to get as much experience as I can while here.

Thanks everyone!

It sounds like you already answered your own question. Gain experience and work on your certifications. Experience, knowledge and certifications will get you the next job. Just be patient.

I thought so. I just wanted to make sure I didn't make an incorrect decision and am moving in the right direction since I went from a LAN admin (glad I did it because that is what made me want to do networking again), to a NOC level 1 position, to a non network position (what made me want to jump), back to a NOC position.
