WGU Cert Assessments - after starting.

kenopkenop Member Posts: 23 ■□□□□□□□□□
I'm trying to fast track my WGU BS IT.
I applied, enrolled, but have not set a start date yet because I wanted to knock out as many of the IT certs in advance as possible, so that they will transfer and waive all the IT courses.

In reading the program guide, it says that one of the types of assessments is Certification Assessment.

Does that mean that , after starting a course, I am still able to just get the certification on my own and pass-out of the course immediately? If so, I won't worry about getting them all right now, and can start sooner.

It means to pass the class..you pass the cert test..

so for IT fundamentals 1 - you pass 1d0-510 and you move on
IT fundamentals 2-3 - you play the A+ part 1 and 2...your done with the class...

so realistically you're not really saving any time. Take the certs for free if anything

Thanks, that's what it sounded like but the enrollment counselor wouldn't give me a straight answer on this.

so i can go ahead and transfer in whatever certs i have now, and start immediately, and as soon as I feel like I can pass the exam for a particular class I can go pass it and move to the next course..

I'm hoping to burn through this thing quick!

You're not really taking the certs for free - they're just included in the cost of tuition.

right, so it's silly of me to worry about paying for and completing all the certs prior to starting my first term at WGU.
i'll just go ahead and start the term.

how do they go about paying for the exams? Vouchers I assume? one attempt per course.

I should have all the easy certs done . so far 4 MTA's. A+/Server+/Security+/Linux+, CIW web foundations, CIW web spec. and in the next couple of weeks should knock out CIW javascript / MTA programming / Project+.

You get 2 attempts (vouchers) per Cert before you have to start paying out of pocket.

I feel like it would be more cost effective to bang out the hard exams out of pocket, since they'd take more time, then get the easy ones done on WGU's dollar, since they'd take less time to study for.

At this point the only one I'd need to rely on WGU for is the programming one, because I'm not sure I can pick up the certs on my own. TXC1/TYC1 and associated Projects, 4x2 credits.

All the other IT ones I should have done within the next couple weeks. Project+ is questionable, as I can't get through 2 pages of the book without falling asleep, lmao.. but I'm sure i can handle it.

all that will be left to suffer through is all the boring gen-ed and science/math stuff. for a degree that I don't actually need lol.

Force yourself through the sybex book for project+ and memorize the formulas. It was an easy test.

Which courses are waived depends on which concentration you pick. As far as I know none of them would take all those certs. The security track should take everything but the network+. They have to be under 5 years old.
