i use the free server virtualization course at MVA with symon perriman and corey hynes. They are so good in explaining every detail of the Hyper-V. Then read the book Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V SYBEX. I also use technet because there are lot of technical info that you will find there. Download the free Windows Server 2012 R2. Its free for 180 days. Just play with it and familiarized yourself with Hyper-V and System Center and you're good to go. I register for the exam Dec, 21 then take it January 9.

Anyone else having issues creating a Prometric account? I've tried at least a dozen different times using Chrome, FireFox and IE on two different computers. Nothing works.

I fill in the information and submit it, I get a popup saying processing, then it just returns me back to the signup page with no explanation.

    Am I missing something?

Does anybody know what this exam will count towards? Will it help with MCSA or something? I'm not too familiar with the Microsoft certification structure.

    Thanks

    Scheduled for the 31st.

Never used Hyper-V, so two weeks of hard learning xD. I think I'm gonna use just the training they provide.

I'm glad that many people are jumping in on this. With virtualization being so commonplace today, this cert will definitely help anyone who wants to break into that sector. From what I've heard from others that have taken it, the test does challenge your knowledge, but nothing ridiculous. The MVA training plus some testing w/ Server 2012 should definitely have people ready. I'm scheduled for Feb 6, and feel that I'm pretty set for it.

Any free text-based resources? The MVA's videos are great, but I feel I grasp new concepts better reading than watching.

I'm looking for some printed stuff also. I registered and seen the videos can be downloaded as MP4 or WMV so I am downloading them to put on my iPad. If I find any printed material I will post it here.

You can also download the slides that they use in the videos. FYI

Just a side note as I will be taking this in a month or so you can go to itdvds.com and use that as study material as well. He has an entire series on Hyper-V 2012R2 and VMM 2012R2. Its $25 for a month subscription. He also has lots of other study material so might as well use that after you finish up with this cert.

after a while searching, it seems there is no specific material for the 74-409 exam, just the MVA's videos and TechNet's posts.

Hi, ( and thanks to poster! )

Im going to do this one in march so hopefully plenty of study time!

Only experience so far is using the old virtual pcs and running XP VM in windos 7.

Just to confirm that when you go to the MS virtual academy and sign in/up for the needed course these are all free of charge?? ( it looks so )

The cert is called Microsoft Certified Specialist: Server Virtualization with Hyper-V and System Center, anyone aware of how this sits? eg below an MCP or MCTS?

Hopefully another one to bang out - fingers crossed!

is the virtual academy videos enough to pass this exam?

x3 on this. I am going to re-sched for end of March (30$ fee but cheaper than paying for actual exam) and am looking to find out the same. I recently passed the VCA-DCV and the free videos were more than sufficient if you have a somewhat understanding of VMware.

Looking to see if the videos on MVA are sufficient enough for this as well.

I will take it tomorrow. I hope i will pass it. I watched the MVA curse online, and I have played with some nested hyper-v servers in vmware:)

( can someone just confirm my crazed rants please? )

The hyper v product is just a standalone product that you can install to a 64 bit box. You then need another 64 bit box running 2012 server r2 that administers the hyper v box via a snap in.

For the sake of this exam you dont want to be just using the Hyper V role and tools direct on the server 2012 box.

Im asking as I have only 1 64 bit box available. ( the other available just a single core 32 bit box - currently with win 7 on it )

    Any info welcome :D

Took the exam and failed with 665 (pass score is 700 as any other MS cert), I went halfway through the MVA course.

I can say that the test is very balanced between Hyper-V and System Center (Entire suite) questions, some powershell on it also. Almost all questions are scenario based ("You work for a compant with X servers", and so on.).

I advise you guys to not go for the test with only Hyper-V knowledge or you'll fail (just like me!).

My plan is to retake the test in a month or so, finish the MVA course, read some articles on technet, and if possible lab a little.

Btw, I also have some experience with Hyper-V Clustering, but haven't worked much with SC suite.

@triplea, you can install and use GUI (Hyper-V manager) to administer it (Create VM's, VHD's, Virtual Switches), or use a WIN7/8 desktop to remote admin it. But you'll need a clustered hyper-v and SCVMM to unleash the full powers of it.

Also I don't know what's the deal of Microsoft having this standalone virtualization cert, maybe the MCITP Virtualization Administrator return?

    Thanks for the info.

So you can add a GUI to the hyper v box directly?

Guys, I passed it today w 814. No so hard, but also not an easy one. The time is enough.
about the questions: a lot is about clustering. there are a few powershell as well, but not so much. there were 55 questions, I think I had 5-8 drag n drop type also: such as create a virtual switch, and what kind of steps are needed.
    good luck!

Awesome, thanks for the tips y'all. I work with Server 2012 in various clustered configurations, also with SCVMM and the SC suite, so I'm hoping this one won't be too difficult.

Edit: As a matter of fact, just finished rebuilding a 2012 DR cluster member as I type this icon_lol.gif

I must have either done something wrong when trying to use the voucher as it said that it wasn't valid, that or all the free exams have been taken already. Oh well not a big concern.

Just curious, if you fail the exam, do you have to pay out-of-pocket to retake it? Or can the voucher be used again?

Dragon KillerDragon Killer Member Posts: 12 ■■■□□□□□□□
DoodahGurlie, you can use the voucher only one time.

If you have another MVA/E-mail you can get another voucher.

Passed this exam this morning. Used the MVA videos, Sybex book and TrainSignal videos. I have zero experience with Hyper V and little with vmWare. MVA alone was not enough IMO, you need at least MVA + Sybex book. Good luck to those studying for this exam!

CarlSaiyed... Congrats on passing!! What Sybex book did you use? I could not find one on this particular exam. Could you point me to the trainsignal videos also? I plan on taking this one next month and it would be a great help. Thanks
