Possible demands for new job counter offer

Hey guys,

I was just given an offer for a job (within the same organization) that I'm considering leaving my current position for. Although during initial interview they mentioned 50K would be the max salary, the are offering 53K along with a new title and a new object code - technical to administrative. My current position pays about 45K. If I wanted to ask my current position to counter offer, what do you guys think my demands should be other than a salary raise? I was thinking about asking for a new Title/Object code since I feel like I'm doing much more than what is in my job description but I'm not sure if my supervisors see it that way, don't know how valuable I am to them. What do you guys think? What is normal to ask for?

Honestly just take the new position. Asking for, and/or accepting a counter offer will only show them that you were ready to leave and don't have strong loyalty to them.

If you wanted to ask for a promotion then it should have been done before you went out job searching and getting other offers. Asking for one should be on the basis of the extra value you're providing to them not what another company is willing to provide you.

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly, he's staying within the same company, just a new role, and is trying to justify more money for the new role, not a counter offer for another company.

Thanks guys! Yep, it's the same company but a completely different IT department. The thing is, I wasn't looking to leave but was approached by a manager and asked to consider it, so I went through the interview process. I've been updating my supervisors on what I've been doing so they're not out of the loop but they didn't say anything about trying to get me to stay. I haven't told them that I actually got the offer yet, just waiting for an offer letter to come in mail.

I wouldn't mess around with trying to get counter offers etc. within the same organization personally. I'd be surprised if they are not aware you have an offer if this is the same organization. HR is usually all over stuff like this keeping managers in the loop.

Thanks, networker! These are two different HR departments as well, but I agree that they might have communicated that they made an offer already.

If a counter is to be made let them bring it to you and not vice versa.

Thanks again, guys! A counter was made but I decided to go with a new job because I feel like I've hit the ceiling as far as my career goes with my current employer and a new one has possible promotional opportunities if I do well.
