Looking for cheap certifications recommendation

yzTyzT Member Posts: 365 ■■■□□□□□□□
I'm looking for a certification with a price around $150 which helps me to land an entry level job, any position.

I thought about ITIL but also Microsoft's certifications come to mind. However, I don't know whether a single certification of Microsoft worth, or by contrast, I have to got the whole set (e.g. 70-410, 70-411, 70-412).

I'm not interested in CompTIA's certifications, got Security+ already.

Any certification will help someone land a job. You need to have some goal to have any shot at getting good feedback.

Since my interests are in networking I would think CCENT is perfect for me if I was you. :)

If you don't have an entry-level IT job already, the MCTS Win 7 might be an awesome fit.
The CCENT is nice, but I don't think HR/Managers really know it exists, so you'll have a tough time trying to explain how the certification makes you valuable. (I know this from 1st hand experience, as I haven't completed my CCNA yet.)
    Goals for 2018:
Certs: RHCSA, LFCS: Ubuntu, CNCF CKA, CNCF CKAD | AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, AWS Solutions Architect Pro, AWS Certified Security Specialist, GCP Professional Cloud Architect
Learn: Terraform, Kubernetes, Prometheus & Golang | Improve: Docker, Python Programming
    To-do | In Progress | Completed

My money is on MS. Even one certification can look good. MCTS Windows 7 is a great certification, it's far beyond basics and let's be honest for entry level jobs having Windows 7 on a resume would never hurt. And it cost 150, not bad.

I have my goals, but right now, I'm interested in any position, be it desktop support, network support, server support, helpdesk... whatever but software developer. When I reach the year of experience, then I'll look for more specific positions.

I was looking at the MCTS Windows 7 (680) but.. isn't it too basic? Wouldn't be better to get the 685? Also, getting only the 70-411 (server 2012 administration) has some value?

If I could, I would take the CCNA but I haven't the funds. And to do an exam in Pearson, I got to add up another $100 due to travelling expenses. I don't have such problem with Prometric, though.

From what I have seen on the Windows 7 forum it gives a lot of entry levels folks a tough time. It's far beyond the basics, you deploy images and even touch some of the server side technology (I believe). I think it is high scalable and worth the 150. Windows 7 is everywhere.

The 70-680 is a well respected cert from what I have seen. For entry level it would probably be better than the 2012 cert as most businesses haven't shifted yet (a lot haven't even shifted to 200icon_cool.gif and the 70-685 may be over your head unless you already have quite a bit of experience.
No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

Don't know how many people know about IT Exam Vouchers - Discount Certification Exam Test Vouchers .... but I purchased a voucher and took 70-685 last May before the 2nd shot promo ended and it came out to $75.

The catch being the vouchers have an expiration date so keep this in mind and it'll really be worth it the closer you wait until this deadline

I agree, for entry level. Nothing beats experience though... I started in a nonpaid IT job that I would go to after my full time job. I had A+ and would apply but I woudlnt get anything, once the two month experience was on my resume I landed my job in my first interview.... luck? I dont think so.

I enlisted after a year of college. Experience with computers, guns and electronics all on a rolling deck. So I got to skip the internship. Well, more like an odd alternative to internship. It comes with a government clearance though.

10 years in the field and I still have to give administrators the not going to happen look. Could be worse, our networking guys are asked to perform magic every couple of months.

Got the voucher! Will try to get the cert as soon as possible (never worked with Hyper-V, just VirtualBox).
