Hey all, I will be moving the the Raleigh/Durham area in April and wanted to see if there are any members currently living there that could give some insight on what it's like there. Trying to find a good location close the the cities, but still out a little ways. The jobs seem to be popping from what I see online.

In all seriousness, I don't live over that way but there are plenty of smaller towns/cities within a reasonable (<45 minute) commute in the surrounding area. Whether you are looking for country living, family friendly, or young unattached adult activities, I don't think you'll problem finding something that will suit you.IT guy since 12/00
Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)
Working on: RHCE/Ansible
Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands... -
zrockstar Member Posts: 378Currently in Raleigh, feel free to hit me up with any questions. Do you know where you will be working at? That would make a big difference on areas to recommend. The city sprawl here is so much that if you want to be out of the city a ways but still want to work in tech, you are probably looking at an hour commute.

I considered Atlanta and Houston as well so far I've ruled out Atlanta I just visited there last month and the people seemed a bit to pretentious for me and traffic was/is horrible there. Both traffic and the people seemed much nicer in Raleigh. I haven't been back to Houston since the late 2000's but I wasn't considering it as a possible home then. I'm more so thinking Austin if I do Texas as the IT market seems better there IMHO . -
DoubleNNs Member Posts: 2,015 ■■■■■□□□□□I originally was thinking Austin as well, but whenever I'd do web searches for jobs in the area, I wouldn't get many results back. That kept me from keeping it a as a consideration - primarily since I've still essentially entry-level and I don't want to be stuck w/o a job whenever I make that move.Goals for 2018:

I hope they are not pulling a fast one on you! In all seriousness - congrats and good luck on the move.Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. Cannibalpriest Member Posts: 16 ■□□□□□□□□□I've lived in Raleigh for the past four years, and unlike all of the other responses, I'm not a big fan of it. It's extremely boring and the state laws are crap. I've gotten taxed and threatened for more then I could ever imagine. Cary is okay, it's mainly just a yankee relocation zone though. Personally I'm looking to get out of here. The IT job market is right though, you won't have problems finding a job if you don't already have one.

If you dont mind me asking, where are you from originally?
Im originally from Philadelphia and relocated to San Antonio 4 years ago and have been looking to escape ever since. Raleigh was on my list of possible places to go to but I dont want to find myself in another place I can't wait to get out of.
I had an opportunity in Raleigh last year that almost had me moving. In the end, it fell just short of what I needed to make the move, especially after I visited and had a similar feeling to the one I had when I visited SATx for the first time... Was it some place I could live? Sure. Was it someplace I wanted to live? No so sure.
Was kind of hoping that vibe was just the "uncertainty" factor more so than the actual city. So what are you comparing your time in Raleigh to?Currently Working On: Openstack
2020 Goals: AWS/Azure/GCP Certifications, F5 CSE Cloud, SCRUM, CISSP-ISSMP -

No I could, I think Louisville actually has a very good IT market, I've always done well here. Just looking for a change, this city isn't my cup of tea.
