I am currently reading a book, Your Route to Cisco Career Success by Kevin Wallace. Very interesting read.

Most books about Cisco certification focus on the knowledge necessary to pass a test and, hopefully, to understand networks and networking. This book doesn't impart any such knowledge. Instead, he talks about goal setting, how to overcome the things that get in the way of reaching your goals, curiosity, time management, where to find the knowledge necessary to pass the exams (books, videos, Cisco's documentation), how to find/gain access to equipment and simulators, and, finally, a little about the various certifications and how best to approach the exams.

Overall, most of what he is writing about has been written about before, but has not been put into one reference work like this. He talks about each subject, giving at least one example per chapter, and includes more in depth books to read on a particular subject (for instance, Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in the time management chapter). Each chapter is short, to the point, and written in an almost conversational tone. I wish that I had had such a book to guide me at the beginning of my first career, as I am sure that I would have gone farther/faster. I do believe that this book is a godsend coming at the beginning of my second career in IT.

Pick it up and check it out.

Cheers
