That depends on experience, certifications, education, etc.

In general, I'd say a Network Admin/Engineer would pay more than a sysadmin.

It should not be about the money, if you are about the $$$$$$ you should of been a brain surgeon. The average is 197,000! Someone who enjoys what they are doing and has a aggressive interest in it, I would rather work with, than the guy waiting for a pay check and taking 50 smoke breaks totaling 2 hours during the day they spent outside… man was I off the subject.

Become an anesthesiaologist they make above $200k and get at least 12 weeks vacation to start if it's about money. If you just like it for the money it will get old fast. When you start in the help desk start to learn what each of them do and whatever you are interested in more read a large book about it. If you make it to the end of the book absolutely fastinayed and wanting more then that's what you choose.

I am surprised you don't have accurate salary surveys in the US. In Europe we have salary surveys where you can see a rough guide to how much a job will pay. Obviously it's still a case by case basis, depending on location, cost of living, experience, education, responsibilities & hours worked.

But according to this link - *in Ireland* - I know that's not the location you asked but it lines up with my thinking on the question... Network engineers get paid more than system administrators, but storage and VMware admins can probably make nearly as much as a CCIE.

But in the whole of IT there is probably only 1% who make it to one CCIE or more. So then it comes down to just being the best at whatever your interest is IMO.

There's no definite answer to that question. You can reach the same level of pay in either realm if you choose the right specialization and become an expert in your field.

The best motivation for becoming an expert, however, is enjoying the subject matter. Choose something you enjoy doing, study your butt off and the money will follow.

Just out curiousity (I'm a curious type - I'm just comparing US wages to Irish wages)... which one of these salary calculators is the most accurate? (I didn't want to create a new thread just for this)
