Avaya networking gear

I just had lunch with one of the networking guys at my new job (going on one month this week). I told him I am working on th CCENT>CCNA. He informed me that thats a good start, but it wont do much good here since they are 90% Avaya, a little bit of Juniper and no Cisco. We had to cut our lunch short due to a call, so I didn't get a chance to ask how someone would move into networking here.
Anyone work with Avaya networking gear? I am afraid that training/learning this stuff might pigeon hole me into working only here since I see many more job ads for Cisco techs.

I work with all different vendors and have to learn their way of doing it, but the protocols are mostly standards based so the learning definitely isn't wasted regardless. An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made.
