Not so much of a failure but experience

If VCP is your ultimate goal then you need to know how to set it up manually anyway, without Autolab.

To be honest, I would get the Mastering vSphere Book, read it and setup the lab in VMware Workstation .. step by step .. only way to learn enough to pass eventually the exam.
