So if take VCP desktop or cloud my DC will be renewed for another two? Or any of the VCAP's? I have no problem with recertifying new versions as long as that ICM class stays out the way.

If ICM would be a requirement every two years I am sure a LOT of VCPs wouldn't bother and rather change technologies. I worked hard to get all these certs and paid a lot and the classes aren't cheap here in the UK. Effectively keeping the VCP would cost me £3000 + £170 every two years. No certification could justify that cost to me ... So yea - I doubt they would do that ... Unless they are pulling a vRam thing ... throwing that out in the open, see who and how many complain and then backtrack :D

Weird, my transcript doesnt list any expiration dates for any of my certs. Anyone else see any expiration dates?

If you go to authenticate your certification mine lists it like this

    Date Certified:
    Oct 17, 2013

    Valid Through:
    Oct 17, 2015

    Certificate Status:
    icon_certified.gif Active

This. I was seriously considering paying for a 5 day class for VCP6 because I didn't want to take a VMware Academy course over 8 weeks to re-learn how to install vSphere again! Now I just need to maintain a VCAP and get my training from CBT Nuggets/Pluralsight/VMtraining... much better

So if you take a VCAP level exam, say VCAP-DCD in v5, then you dont need to take a course as a prerequisite course to achieve the same level of VCAP in v6?

I am confused - there is no course requirement for VCAP ?

@nel - Mmm, yes I think so. But I will admit I'm more confused than ever. icon_scratch.gif

If it's like the Cisco exams then you just need to maintain the VCAP instead of the lower VCP. But I've read conflicting stuff here and there that I'm going to wait it out until I hear a final explaination. Do we still have version numbers?? I dunno..

Sorry if I am adding to the confusion!

So you do a VCP5 and get a VCAP5. Then you can just get a VCAP 6 and not have to worry about the VCP6. However, You can't got VCP5 to a VCAP 6 without doing either a VCP6 or vCAP 5.

    Yeah?

If that's the case then happy days, no more VCPs. Thanks for clarifying kj0.

Don't quote me on that though, It's just how I continue to understand it and that's coming from a few VMware employees who have blogged about it.

But wasn't that always the case ? The VCAP5-DCA for example has as requirent a VCP5 OR VCAP4.

So in theory right now, you can have a VCP4, VCAP4 and VCAP5, skipping VCP5 entirely .. .

Unless I am mistaken here, but that is how I read the requirements:

(VCAP5-DCA) VMware Certified Advanced Professional 5

So that isn't new at all.

I've never heard of a cert actually being REVOKED after two years. Expired or retired, sure, but not revoked. It's horse sh*t IMO. As if your brain is wiped clean after two years and all of your accumulated knowledge and experience is instantly lost. Nonsense. icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks jibba! It's starting to make sense now.. Like I say I was confused, this is my first time renewing and then they change the rules completely and don't make a YouTube video and explain it like on some of their KB articles. I know you like KB articles too! icon_razz.gif

So like I say, happy days - VCAP-DCA here I come!

Yep! Let's put this to rest then. The gist of this is they want:

    - people to shell out more money re-certifying
    - to encourage people to move up the cert chain i.e. get a VCAP or get another VCP (DT/Cloud/NSX etc) << Good thing. Everyone should pass the DCA atleast, it'll help you get better at your jobs.

In the past you needed an initial $4000 class, then if you upgraded w/in 6 months of a new exam you didn't need a class.
After 6mo you needed a $1500 class and had 4-6 years to update at that price, after which you started over needing a $4000 class.

Now, you still need an initial $4000 class if you have never passed a VCP before. After that you have 2 years to pass another exam with no course requirement. If you miss the 24-month window you need to start over with a $4000 class.

The VCAP exams have never had a class requirement, but did require a matching-level VCP. Note that the "levels" have all but disappeared. Only the DCV track still has them.

Taking a VCP exam will reset all your VCP exams to 2 years. Taking a VCAP exam will reset all your VCP and VCAPs to 2 years.
I see no fine print that you cannot take the same exam again. You also never have to take the same exam again - if you hold all VCPs and VCAPs you can just take the VCAP-DTD every other year to keep everything "current".

Sorry for the simple question, i am just getting confused now! haha.

If you have VCP4-DCV and VCAP4-DCA you could take VCAP5-DCA which would also grant you VCP5-DCV.

In the past VCAP granted no more class requirements as long as the next version of that VCAP exam was available.
Now any VCP or VCAP grants no more class requirements for 2 years.

Note that if you have all available VCP and VCAP, taking one VCAP exam every two years will "recertify" all of them. Miss the 24-month window and you start over again with no certs and a class requirement.
