Question for anyone here that works or has worked at Google

Do they only call you back if you have an internal employee refer you? I tried applying with no response. A friend emailed my resume to HR and I promptly got replies. Do they only hire people that know people inside or something? I know that they only were responding from my friends internal application because their recruiters contacted my personal email (my friend only knows this one) rather than my professional email which I used on the application. Can anyone give me any insight into this?

I'm sure they get stacks upon stacks of resumes every day. The internal referral I'm sure brought your resume to the top of the humongous stack.

I know someone that interviewed there without knowing anyone on the inside though so it is possible.

I forget where I read a while back, but, I think they get 1500 resumes a day to work there.

If you always have a friend on the inside you skip a lot of steps but figure how many people always know someone on the inside? There is always a change to get in without that extra help.

An internal referral almost guarantees you at least a phone screen whereas applying on your own gets you put in the stack of 500 other resumes.

Internal referrals pull a lot of weight at most tech companies.
