Good luck Tomko! I'm actually from Cleveland originally myself, was up there visiting family for the St. Patrick's day holiday.

I'm sure you will get plenty of feedback since many here have went the WGU NA route

    The orientation was ridiculous lol.
  • PSouz7PSouz7 Member Posts: 39 ■■□□□□□□□□
I have to agree, the orientation was pretty stupid.

my enrollment counselor said it was going to take 6 hours, I'm glad it only ended up taking me 1

Started in February in the Network Admin track. So far, so good. I've knocked out 6 classes so far. You definitely can do more if you have the time and energy. Good luck!

So I've been assigned my mentor. Already did my initial call with her. Thus far my student portal hasn't worked correctly. I cannot access my degree plan. It has some server error. The helpdesk is supposedly looking into it.

I emailed my mentor requesting whether or not there was a list of upper level courses that knock out lower level as well and as of yet have not heard anything back. I'm hoping there are at least a few in the NA track that do this.

I didn't know there were so many fellow Cleveland kin here. I'm possibly looking into the Software track. Already have my BA, but looking at the program for some experience, training, and certs. Still need to take the entrance exam, but I'm not 100% yet on the program. Good luck!

Good luck. I am hoping to start May 1st, myself. Also, while not from Cleveland, my wife is from there. Tiny world.

For someone getting into IT, you better stop using phrases like "The helpdesk is supposedly looking into it" because soon enough, it will be YOU looking into something and having impatient end users saying things like "supposedly" ;) haha

I'm another that's strongly considering it. Once I get my Security+, I'm going to start studying for my CCNA and get into a program, which I'm thinking is going to be WGU's BSIT-Security track.

    GL OP.

I still cannot get into my degree plan, hopefully they will get it fixed this week. It is very annoying at this point, I was wanting to take some pre-assessments.

So after a rough couple of months outside of school and a general lack of desire to learn HTML, I finally finished IT Fund 1 this weekend. 2 and 3 should be a lot faster and easier for me lol. Then on to Operating Systems and Principles of Management. I should be able to finish all of those by Mid July and then have 2 months or so left to do some add on classes for the term.
  • TomkoTechTomkoTech Member Posts: 438
So my first term has come to a close. I have to admit I slacked MAJORLY. I finished IT Fundamentals I/II/III (WFV1/EAV1/EBV1), Operating Systems(ABV1) and Principles of Management(MGC1)

Operating Systems I presumed was going to be a joke and blew it off until the last minute. I took the practice examine and realized I was woefully unprepared to take that exam. So I crammed for a week on the areas that were foreign to me(BranchCache/ImageX type stuff) and thankfully passed it this morning just in time to end my first semester.

Phone call with my mentor tomorrow to set up my term for next semester where hopefully I can stay on task and bang out a lot more than 21 CUs.

So work got really hectic. We were understaffed for almost a year and my degree got put on hold. Scheduled to start back up June 1st. But Im going the security track now. The courses I need are:

    C168 Critical Thinking and Logic
    C480 Networks
    C451 Integrated Natural Science
    C178 Network and Security- Applications
    C164 Intro to Physics
    C175 Data Management - Foundations
    C170 Data Management - Applications
C246 Fundamentals of Interconnecting Network Devices
    C257 Interconnecting Network Decives
    C484 Organizational Behavior and Leadership
    C376 Web Development Fundamentals
C176 Business of IT - Project Management
    C179 Business of IT- Applications
    C299 Designing Customized Security
    C435 Technical Writing
    C436 IT Capstone

With that said, does anyone know of any of the higher level courses that will knock out credit for the lower level ones as well? I would think I could skip the Network+ and Security+ classes if I did the CCNA/CCNA Security courses no?
  • EnderWigginEnderWiggin Member Posts: 551 ■■■■□□□□□□
I don't think you can just skip those courses. But you can jump straight to scheduling the certification test, and that will clear the course quickly (so long as you pass, that is).

It's been about a year and a half since I was enrolled. However WGU did allow you to receive credit for lower tier courses by completing the upper tier versions first. You just had to submit a request through your mentor for the course credit.

**Edit** Btw that's my favorite book ;)

Ah, gotcha. Well just check with your mentor which ones are do-able. And if they aren't skippable, you at least have the option to fly throught he courses and get them done super quickly. I've been enrolled for a month and a half now, and already have six courses completed towards my masters because I was able to get the assignments done at a good pace.

How could it not be your favorite book? It's the greatest novel series ever :D Card needs to hurry up and write Shadows Alive already....

The cert classes such as Net+ and Sec+ can only be skipped if you have a Certification listed in the requirements met list you might check the site to see if it is listed, they have a specific list per course of what can be used to meet requirements. The period you are referring to where the upper class could meet requirements was during a period where they had several different versions of the course lists going and were transitioning the students to the latest ones. In certain course groupings the course went from a single to double courses and other classes were dropped. To make sure that the student still received enough credits they set these classes up where the old single classes become the the equivalent of the higher level of the new double course version or in cases were the core subject changed. This meant that you wouldn't end up having to take the entry level for one course after meeting requirements for the higher level or have to go and take a class in a different programming language after meeting the requirements for a different one. Due to the way the courses are set up and the way accreditation works once people not in the midst of course changes realized this could be done as well, at this point almost all of the classes you could do this with are no longer available to be changed.
