***Fell Asleep At work ***

IS3IS3 Member Posts: 71 ■■□□□□□□□□
Sorry for my wrong grammar and use of the english words..

I am working as an IT Support Specialist in a small local bank and as my title say I am at the bottom of the food chain. Anyway, for some reason i have a lot of downtime and i would catch my self surfing the web more than using my time for something i would benefit like reading, doing training etc. and just now about 45 minutes ago i fell asleep for like 30 minutes but no one noticed since everyone is busy in their own role. has anyone here caught themself dozing off or sleeping? and how can i use my time in a more productive way. P.S its not like i dont do my task or finish my tickets, i finish them all first or some of them may be due tomorrow icon_lol.gif

Thank you and have a wonderful IT day icon_wink.gificon_thumright.gif:)

From time-to-time people will nod off, but that is where you must learn the warning signs and get on your feet. Do some light stretching, take a walk, go to the restroom, etc. As for putting your time to good use, this forum is a start. Next, find your future cert and start studying it. Some locations won't allow physical books, so consider investing in electronic books and read them on your computer.

I catch myself falling asleep almost everyday. My kids have no idea how to sleep so I get woken up throughout the night. When I find myself dozing off I just getup and walk around for a few minutes and that seems to help.

Caffeine can be your friend! I usually keep a couple 5-hour energies around work for days when I can't keep myself awake otherwise.

I think we all have. I found myself closing my eyes for a few minutes and if I am really dragging, I shut my office door at lunch and nap on the floor of my office. I usually feel refreshed after that.

Recently I dozed for maybe 5 minutes before I realized, that never really happens though. I was up for most of the night with my daughter, was a super boring day at work, hah, oh well.

Never fell asleep. Had a coworker do this one and they warned him, that he would be terminated if he did it again. Not that I agree, but if there is a sign of wasting money it would be sleeping on the job. 0 productivity.

    I second that statement.

I used to feel sleepy in the afternoon at work. I had a sleep test done. Diagnosed with sleep apnea. I sleep with CPAP machine. Never feel sleep during the day any longer. :)

Seen people fired for sleeping at work. And this was during the night shift when there was no work to do.

If you do get sleepy, get up and walk around. Drink a lot of water. That will keep you busy in between drinking it, going to get it from the fountain, and going to the restroom.

If you cannot hold it off, consider taking time off if possible or using your lunch time to take a cat nap in your car, just remember to set more than 1 alarm on your phone!

Sugar wakes me up faster than caffeine, but I sometimes do both. Best is to do a quick stretch break and get some water and coffee or something. And I'm jealous of you guys with boring, down time. Just came from a job with no down time at all. Chaos and things broken all day long, haha.

Sometimes around afternoon time I can barely keep my eyes open. I have never fallen asleep but sometimes I get extremely sleepy. What the others have suggested helps - get up and walk a little, stretch, have something to drink(coffee is a saver). Also, try not to get too comfortable in your chair :D

Why does that seem ludicrous to you? I disagree but I am more curious was to why you feel so strongly about it.

I am wondering, do you have children? Before kids, I would have thought it was ludicrous too. But I work two jobs, including an overnight job and every single day I sleep at work, on my respective lunch breaks.

When I just worked the night shift, I would still sleep on my breaks because I had to be alert during the day for child duty.

It isn't a ludicrous idea to a lot people, I am sorry you have minimal compassion for those of us who can't quite cut it during their work shifts ;)

I would say that I have never fallen asleep ON my work shift when I was doing my assigned duties... just on breaks.

I fell asleep at my last job once and they never let me live it down. Now I work 12 hour shifts every day and I take caffeine pills in the morning and afternoon. I initially started taking them for weight loss and metablosim acceleration but I continue to take them because they help me stay productive and alert while on the clock.

MusclePharm Shred Matrix is what I use.

Some of you have probably heard about this before but at certain office jobs in Japan sleeping at work is a sign that you're a hard worker.

Though obviously like anything you can abuse that and get noticed quickly. Still have to be productive, but a nap here and there doesn't hurt.

Also instead of firing people, sometimes they'll just have you sit in a room and do either nothing or extremely menial tasks till you quit.

Yep, try not getting a full night of sleep, for over two years straight, then do something really boring for a couple hours, suddenly the idea of being exhausted doesn't seem so crazy. Again in my case it was only for a couple minutes and I really surprised myself. For what it's worth lots of people take longer trips to the bathroom than the time I dozed off.

I had a co worker who took a bunch of X.anax and passed out at his desk. There was drool. Everywhere. Another time he actually passed out in our lobby on one of the sofa's. And then another time I found him sleeping in one of our conference rooms...No idea how/why he still works here icon_rolleyes.gif

When I first moved to America I got a job at a local school, my co-workers were about the same age as me, so we always he a good time. Anyway, one day the maintenance guys were cutting the grass. As I was coming in from lunch, the grass blew in my face. When I sat down at my desk, I looked down and notice I had hives EVERYWHERE... Apparently I was allergic to something. Anyway, my co-worker gave me two benadryl. At the time I didn't know that these are loaded with antihistamine. Needles to say, I fell asleep. Well, it was more of a coma. He gave me these around 12PM and I woke up at 6PM, in the dark, in my office. He still reminds of me about this day every now and then.

I nerver did .. Horribly tired and almost, yes, but never actually fell asleep. I am feeling to guilty to just let go so I would just grab a drink or some fresh air .

Having said all that - I don't remember where, but wasn't there an Asian company having sleeping pods in the company. After all, it is proven that power naps help productivity ...

Other than my car, I've gone into the server room over my lunch break to power nap before. ~20 minutes is suppose to be ideal to refresh you without being too little or too much. Door is locked and the room is warm and noisy. Since it is on my break, there isn't any lost productivity or money to my employer.

On the topic, have you ever noticed when you're in situation like this, that you keep waking up because of that mental pressure to not over do it and sleep longer than you should? Even when you have spare time in the morning and want to sleep a little more before leaving. Hate that!

I typically keep my energy drinking limited to days where I have to be in meetings. If it isn't one where I am playing a big part of and just sitting there listening to someone else drone on....it takes a toll on me.

It literally means, "sleeping while present".[1] It is a way for an employee to show how committed they are to working. In other words, the employee spends so much time working that they sleep too little at home and have to do inemuri.

I see people falling asleep at my job all the time.

    My advice:
eat less breads&pastas (includes cereal), drink a cup of coffee, and exercise before work. you wont get as sleepy by doing this even if bored.

    why?

    1. breads&pastas
-converts into glucose. If you have high glucose in your body then you get drowsy.
-try eating some beans in tomato sauce in a tortilla wrap. Why? The high protein and fiber intake early in the morning will help keep you awake. Not a fan of beans? Just eat something high in protein, eg, eggs and bacon.

    2. coffee
    - Hot liquid will help wake you up and caffeine kicks in about 20 minutes later

    3. exercise before work
-gets your body moving and active. makes you happier and more alert after exercising. A 20 minute jog should do the trick.

It's funny I always thought there was something wrong with me. I find myself dozing off for a couple minutes throughout the day usually in the morning hours or after lunch. If I am doing nothing or if I am studying I often find myself dozing off but still somehow to pep right up right before someone comes in or my office/cell phone rings...it's like I am sleeping but know what is going on...this happens as well if I am listening to CBT training videos I somehow remember what was said even though I fell asleep. If I am crazy busy I do not fall asleep even though I could be tired of the long day. I still find myself lugging myself to the gym after work 4 days out of the week (if it's not too late in the PM)...I wonder how I do it sometimes

I feel strongly about it because it is unacceptable to sleep while you are supposed to be working.
I would say that I have never fallen asleep ON my work shift when I was doing my assigned duties... just on breaks.
    I am glad.

There simply has been a miscommunication here. The words "falling asleep at work" generally mean falling asleep while you are at work and should be working. I have no issue with someone who sleeps on breaks. That is not company time. It is a break. You can do (within limitations) whatever you wish with break time as it is your time, not company time.

To fall asleep at work though is completely unacceptable. You can feel it coming on. As others have said, get up and walk around.

I have worked 3 jobs and been in school, all simultaneously. I know what tired is but I would never let myself fall asleep at work.
