Am i applying too soon?

Hey texams, i recently got a job working at hp through a contract house as a lvl 1 support agent doing basic help desk work. ive been there about 4 months, I love the job and the environment but when i accepted the position i knew i would have to drive an hr everyday back and forth. at first it wasn't bad but now its beginning to take a toll on my vehicle and my sanity.as a result Ive begun applying to other help desk jobs closer to my home in hopes i may find something a bit closer. my question is should i just stick it out at this position for about 2 more months(ive heard the earliest you should leave a job is 6) or potentially find another position?

How would that look on my resume or is it ok because it would count as a contract?

One or two short stints aren't a problem. Just don't make a habit of it.

I would stick it out. You love the job and the environment, the commute is only an hour, and it is only two more months. You have a steady job so this is the perfect time for a vehicle upgrade if that is the problem here. I also feel like if you stay longer you have a better chance of "moving up" from help desk; whereas, if you move now you will likely end up in help desk again.

Also, keep in mind that finding a good environment is not an easy task, at least not in my experience.

I would also suggest to stay at least a year or something because you can put it on your resume having a year experience will help you out! I did it where in my resume i put 1 year and a half but they didnt know it was part time help desk. So yeah HP man you cant go wrong compared to small businesses jobs.

I would start applying closer to home and just mention the drive as being your primary reason for leaving when you get interviewed... an hour long drive is a pretty legitimate reason to look for another position IMO.

If you're contract, you can always use that as your excuse. Short term contracts.

Might be time to get a new ride, Thex. An hour commute isn't horrible...Especially if you love the job.

I agree an hour commute is tolerable if you truly love your job and coworkers, as I drive 45 minutes on a normal traffic day and 2-3 hours on days when we get snow storms to get to and from work and I wouldn't consider moving to another company at this point.

And I reeeeeally thought I wouldn't last more than a couple months dealing with that drive.

An hour isn't really a terrible commute, it's really up to you though and it never hurts to keep looking for better opportunities.

If you wanted to work closer to home but took this job because its you got called back for, but now you are able to work closer to home...then do it!

But like others have said, a good work environment is worth the extra time/gas/wear on the car. I drove 1h 20m daily for a poor work environment, now drive 30m daily for a good work environment

This is your first IT job, I'm sure there is more to learn and leaving within the first year would not look best on a resume IMO.

I really wish my commute was an hour total... lately my commute has been 2.5-3 hours daily.

If the ride is taking that much of a toll on you, then I would move closer. It's hard finding a good job, especially one that you actually love and has a good environment. I would stick it out there as long as possible.
