OSPF Multipont send multicast hello's! really?
I'm thinking i should have one big ospf thread lol.
I've got 2 routers R2 and R5 connected via a FR cloud, both setup as ospf network type point-to-multipoint, broadcast capability is added R5's dlci and R2s dlci is just unicast.
Interestingly enough the adjacency establishes and drop after dead interval expires and cycles through this behavior continuously. It turns out ospf multipoint interfaces will respond to the first received multicast hello with a unicast hello to complete the init state, all other states send unicast messages until the adjacency is established, after which hellos are multicast and hence the dead timer will expire on R5 due to no hello's being received from R2.
Same neighbor establishment behavior is seen when both sides support broadcast i.e. after init stage everything is unicast until adjacency forms.
If neither side supports broadcast, the neighbor cant establish as it cant get past the init stage, this is why i've never noticed this before.
Good to be aware of this as with long dead interval timers, you might be wondering why you are seeing network instability.

Good to be aware of this as with long dead interval timers, you might be wondering why you are seeing network instability.

re: your sig, that's unfortunate.... -
EdTheLad Member Posts: 2,111 ■■■■□□□□□□I don't think you understood the post, the point is, point-to-multipoint can establish if only one side is broadcast capable. It will timeout however and cycle through this again and again. The database exchange is unicast but once established it will commence with multicast for hellos and LSAs. Before testing this, i would have said the neighbor would never establish. This would be a nice fault for TS or lab, if the multiaccess network has large timers imagine dead interval 240 or longer, everything looks good, full connectivity achieved, start working on redistribution and network starts falling over. All because "broadcast" missing on FR map, since neighbors were up you wouldn't be thinking about that.Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$

Dieg0M Member Posts: 861There's a couple of things like these in the config section. Most of them have to do with BGP as they have by default very long timers. If you have not seen these behaviours before, you might be in for a very expensive lunch. I didnt know about this one, thanks!Follow my CCDE journey at www.routingnull0.com
