teancum0 Member Posts: 9 ■□□□□□□□□□I've been thinking a lot about this lately too. Going to finally work on getting my LPIC-1 took a practice exam and only got 30% for now. Things that have been helping me recently though
1. I've been wanting to start a website and do my own cloud services. So I set up two VMs (both Centos) One I've installed owncloud and got it functioning the other I'm installing wordpress on. I've been googling the tasks I need to do and not just entering the commands listed but figuring out what they actually do.
2. Install Gentoo. I did this a long time ago but it helped a ton with learning some of the basics. The first time I went through the whole install it didn't make sense and my machine failed, but I learned a ton and the second time I went through it I was able to see what I did wrong.
Another thing going for me lately is we have a project at work that is running on linux so I've had lot's of getting up to speed there as well. Since we work closely with Novell. It's all Suse which has been nice to learn with as well. -
lsud00d Member Posts: 1,571I just scanned through the thread and didn't see it mentioned but...aside from just installing a *nix flavor in a VM and running through standard admin functions, you need to learn FHS...I'm not even kidding.
FHS is a huge concept and it should be fully appreciated to understand *nix. You need to know how it's structured, where things commonly are located, and why it is arranged that way. Any good *nix admin understands what's under the hood of FHS. -

Pretty much the only time I use Windows these days is at work.
