WGU BSIT starting 5-1-14
I am real excited just got my transcript evaluation back and I transferred in 91 credits. I want to thank the guys who gave me the heads up on the deadline to transfer in classes if it wasn't for that information I would've started by June.
I transferred in AAS in computer studies, few straighterline courses, CLEP Analyzing Literature, CCNA, CCDA, CIW Javascript, CIW Database, CIW Site designer, MCP Win XP, and A+. Just need 31 more credits to go which consists of these classes:
RIT1 Leadership concepts
TPV1 Project Management
BNC1 Organizational behavior and leadership
TYC1 intro to object oriented
TYP1 project intro to object oriented
TXC1 Intro to programming
TXP1 Project in intro to programming
Principles of management
Tech writing
Capstone
I'm going to push for completion in 1 term. Do you guys think thats feasible with the current classes I have left?

I took C and C+ programming in my AAS and it was a breeze. But reading everyones feedback on those java classes gets me a bit worried.

ratbuddy Member Posts: 665Just read Head First Java and watch the Lynda videos on object oriented design, and you'll be all set. The (difficulty of the) Java classes are highly overrated, they're really quite basic. Heck, you don't start for a month. Read the book now, along with the Project+ book, and you'll be that much quicker.

Danielm7 Member Posts: 2,310 ■■■■■■■■□□The electronic version is included, if you want the paper copy you'll have to buy it. As for the java stuff, if you've got any background in programming it should be easy, if not, as in my case and it is your first time doing anything more than a script it's a lot more challenging.

Cert Poor Member Posts: 240 ■■■□□□□□□□I'm currently certing up a lot before I apply to WGU. I had no idea you could also take CLEP courses for those to transfer! I might have to look into CLEP Analyzing Literature or others, but it's really hard to tell what I need or don't need.
Is it worth knocking out CIW classes before applying to WGU?
And good luck, dmarisco. I'm actually surprised with how fast these classes run, even when working full-time. I took some computer science courses in undergrad, and the assignments and group projects took hours. It almost makes me worry that WGU is somewhat watered down.In progress: MTA: Database Fundamentals (98-364)
Next up: CompTIA Cloud Essentials+ (CLO-002) or LPI Linux Essentials (010-160)

I don't know what your background is but I was enrolled in a BA in Computer Science which had me taking a lot of software engineering, programming, web development, database management courses. Only reason I didn't continue is that it would take me another year or so to finish. The CIW was pretty basic. Is it worth it to take before enrolling? Well I paid out of pocket for ciw exams that wgu would've gave a voucher for but now I don't have to worry about taking those classes and thats one more thing off my plate.
This link shows what classes can transfer from alternative sources

ratbuddy Member Posts: 665Yes, that is the video. If you watch and understand it, you'll have a great jump on the Java stuff.
Head First Java.. Yeah, it's included with the course, and I doubt anyone would hold it against you if you got an 'early access' pdf somewhere.
edit: The Lynda stuff is included with WGU tuition, so if you can, rather than paying, try to 'log in through your school' link and log in to the WGU SSO, it might work even though you didn't start yet. -

My Degree Plan is open to view the remainder classes I have left to take. I immediately noticed my schedule reflects the updated BSIT program which I found a bit odd. My Enrollment adviser told me yesterday for me to be enrolled in the new program I have to push my start date until June. I noticed some discrepancies it has it shown that I need to take Web programming 1DO-635, College Algebra, and Finite Math.
I was orignally awarded transfer credit for those classes and in the show Past Terms it shows those classes as transferred. My degree plan has a total 131 CU's required but on the WGU website it clearly shows 122. I emailed my enrollment adviser he said he is looking into it. Hope with the updated CU given to those classes it doesn't turn my degree plan into a cluster F**. -

Spoke to my mentor she was very pleasant to deal with. She made the adjustments in my degree plans. This is officially all I have to complete:
BNC1 Organizational Behavior and Leadership
MGC1 Principles of Management
TPV1 Project Management
C221 Operating Systems
C220 Operation Systems
SBT1 Technical Writing
QZT1 IT CAPSTONE PROJECT
My enrollment advisor told me I was still in the old program but since it showed the new program in my course schedule I chose not to mention it to my Mentor so I'm starting 5/1/14 with no Java classes. -

I'm pretty aggravated they just sent Student success kits yesterday 5-5-14 and I am expected to receive it by 5/13. Its important because it has the webcam that I need to do the online proctored test. Apparently I can only use there webcam not mines.
Took BNC1 Organizational Behavior and Leadership preassessment last week got a 67% cut score is 51%. A few new terms came up I studied and retook on sunday scored a 88% on the 2nd preassessment. Scheduled Assessment for 5/9 but since no webcam yet I rescheduled for 5/14.
I will take preassessment for MGC1 Principles of Management tonight to see what I need to study. -

I was thinking about doing some straigherline courses to transfer in.. how did you feel about that process? Were they pretty quick if you had the time to devote or was there a hurry up and wait? I am curious, as I have been rocking out my certifications this year, and I want to get as many transfers as humanly possible, although I have zero college experience before....
I checked the standard Bachelors of IT path and there appears to be at least 10 courses I can transfer in from StraighterLine.. I have all the MTAs already that you receive from the degree, so I think they will transfer in and count for those 6 classes, plus I have my MCSA in Win 7..
Any guidance about straighterline would be amazing..
thanks! -
Legacy User Unregistered / Not Logged In Posts: 0 ■□□□□□□□□□Some classes were quicker then others but on average it took me roughly <2 weeks per course. For most classes it consists of a few quizzes which are open book and a closed book proctored final. On average the final is usually worth 20 points towards your final grade and a 70 is considered a pass at most school depending on the program. If you can score high the quizzes and get at least a 70 you don't have to worry about the final. All you need is to get the book for that class and in most of the cases it should give you a leg up.
Don't think it took me a few weeks to get all of the straighterline courses done. It took me a few months between taking straighterline and school classes at school to finish my Associates and a good portion of my Bachelors at another school. -
Legacy User Unregistered / Not Logged In Posts: 0 ■□□□□□□□□□*Update my webcam finally arrived 5/13 which was a relief since I was at a stand still until it arrived.
*Took BNC1 Assessment today passed with a 60% cut score is 51% which was surprising since the preassessment was much easier then the final and I thought I failed. I just requested approval for MGC1 final assessment hoping to schedule by next thursday.
23 cu left (6 more classes to go!) -

Passed MGC1 Assessment with 76% cut score is 51% now on Project +. First time I'm working on a certification at WGU should I just request a voucher or is it after a preassessement?
7 CU's down 19 more to go! -

Spoke to Mentor and she added the last 4 classes to my current term. Linux LX0-101, LX0-102, Tech Writing, and Capstone. This will be the first time I'm doing a performance assessment at WGU where do I submit the paper? I logged into TaskStream but its basically a blank canvas not sure what I do at this point. Can anyone can help out with that? -
zidian Member Posts: 132It takes a couple days for the Task Stream course to be added. On the left hand side, there will be a link that says the name of the class. Once you get in, the rest is pretty easy to figure out. If you are close to submitting, your mentor can send an email to the Task Stream guys asking them to bump your order in the queue. I had to do that a couple times with my mentor.WGU BS-IT Software | Completed 9/30/2014

The last few weeks I was working on the linux stuff but I kept starting and stopping the month was coming to a close so I wanted to finish this month strong . I paused studying linux and started the tech writing on Monday. I got a revision back for the competency matrix apparently they literally want you to name the domains they mention and not the sub domains or name of the class. Made the adjustments got a pass on the paper today Technical Writing done! I will start working on the capstone tonight and hopefully submit it by tomorrow afternoon.
Just 3 more classes to go! -
Legacy User Unregistered / Not Logged In Posts: 0 ■□□□□□□□□□Had a question for the capstone for the people who completed it. Can I just use the paper I used for tech writing and add a project development section 5 - 8 pages to it and its good to go?
