2 weeks notice standard?

    I'm not considering leaving my current employer anytime soon but if I did, I'd give them enough time to replace me whenever that day comes.

    I've always done a 2 week notice. One I was immediately let go on the spot, the other I stayed on for a week and they told me to not worry about the second week as I was moving to take the new job. I plan on giving 2 weeks when/if I land another position, although where I am now expect an immediate reaction on, just kind of my gut feeling.

    I wouldn't give any less than two weeks. you don't want to burn a bridge, you never know of you might see people again in the future. Also some companies including the one I am about to leave will not pay out for PTO if you do not give at least 2 weeks.

    I know that if I gave 2 weeks notice at my current gig, they would walk me out the door that very moment. But 2 weeks is a good number unless they request you stay a little longer till they find your replacement.

    Also I have had a job give me 2 weeks notice, very odd but was very nice of them to do so.

    don't do that man...cuz who knows how long that will be. just put in your 2 weeks, and go on to your next opportunity. Also, the new job will only wait but so long...

    Reading some of these...I would be incredibly furious if I gave a courtesy 2-4 weeks notification and was let go on the spot. I wouldn't hulk rage or anything (maybe internally icon_wink.gif) but...talk about audacity!

    Luckily feedback mechanisms are available in the professional world, a la Glassdoor reviews. I encourage any and all to provide accurate and objective (not subjective...no feelings!) reviews in both good and bad scenarios...although by the nature of things, nobody ever wants to provide feedback unless it's negative...it's a psychological response to meet aggression with aggression by any available channel.

    I've always given two weeks notice when leaving a job. Although I would have preferred to have left the last one a little sooner, I figured it best to make sure any loose ends were tied up, and that bridges weren't napalmed by just jumping out the door with little or no notice. I have to say though, it is sort of awkward sticking around those last two weeks..

    4 weeks is the norm for perm jobs in the UK and Oz. The only time i have seen shorter periods are in contract roles.

    Always give sufficient notice. Never burn bridges.

    Yep, 4 weeks in Australia is standard for permanent jobs. Like most have said, never burn a bridge. You never know who may know someone that knows someone!
