Hey Guys...

Im currently a WGU student and im on the IT Management program. I'm going to be changing programs to the IT:Network Admin program. I have done Help Desk work for about 5 years now and i honestly want to move on to hands on roles and away from the call center enviorment.

I would like to know which certs in the Network Admin program will enable me to get into a Desktop Support role or a JR.Admin /NOC role. Since i don't know who my new mentor will be i want to be ready to align the courses to provide me the advantage to get a position in one of those roles...

In any case, feel free to give me some advice whatever the case maybe...

I'm in the Network Admin program myself. So, I would imagine, if you don't have any of these already, that the CCNA would definitely help for getting into a NOC role, and the various Microsoft certs (MCTS, MCSA, etc.) will definitely help you get into more of a Sys Admin/Desktop Support role.

If you want something in a NOC then the CCENT->CCNA is the route. If you want something in the Jr. Sys Admin role then the MCSA would be the one to go after. Pretty much all the other certs are useless for either of those roles except, maybe project+ which will be of some benefit no matter what you do, but, won't help in landing a job in my opinion.

So basically if i work with CCENT/CCNA i can do NOC and MCSA will put me to Jr.Admin

Does it pay to know Linux as well for System Admin roles ????

It always pays to know Linux no matter what. With all that said don't expect a job will come by just passing them. Certs don't = job, but, will help
