Subinterface ping delay

Just a quick one guys, if you've got a router with a few subinterfaces and dhcp is handing out addresses as normal is it okay for the PC to not be able to ping the router the first time but rather the 2nd time be successful? Similarly with PC's in different VLANS on the same gateway, I seem to have to ping the gateway from both PC's before I can ping between the PC's if that makes sense.

isn't it arping? on the cbt nuggets video his first request when first setting up anything the 1st one would fail because it is in the process of arping, then after that all would go through

Yes the first time you ping that router it has to gather all kinds of information, device MAC addresses, the route it will take etc. So your first of 4 packets may get an ! . No worries man.
