Originally worked in finance, retrained in IT through an unemployment service here in Ireland. Obtained A+ and Network+ certifications during this and got exposure to windows server. I took self employed route initially and outlined progress from there. Money is in euros.

    Title: Self employed
    Hour/wk: Anything from 20 - 60 hours per week
Description: SME support and PC Tech
    Company size: 1
    Age: Mid-late 20s
    Duration: 3 years
How: Built a website, used adwords :)
    Certs: A+/Network+
    Education: High school equivalent
Pay: Anything from 0 to 400/day

Spoke with a contractor I knew who recently gave up self employment and I was having doubts of my own at the time about working for myself so gave it a shot.

    Title: 3rd Level Desktop Support
Hour/wk: 40/week. On call too but only got 2 calls in a year
Description: Desk side support, 99.999% Win7 based but a little mac support too.
Company size: 40k+, my location had about 500.
    Age: 30
    Duration: Just over a year
How: Referred by a contractor I knew
Certs: A+/Network+ - worked on CCNA, JNCIA and ITIL-F while here.
    Education: High school equivalent
Pay: 40k plus bonus plus oncall - total was over 50k.

Not enough networking experience was coming my way in my role as most of it was being managed in another country so I started looking elsewhere.

    Title: NOC
    Hour/wk: 12 hours shifts, 4 on - 4 off (nights included)
Description: Monitoring about 5000 servers for alerts in an online company, highly sensitive to outages
    Company size: 4000
    Age: 31
    Duration: 1 year
How: Applied directly as it was a company I was interested in joining.
    Certs: A+/Network+/CCNA/JNCIA/ITIL-F - Obtained Linux+/LPIC1 while here
    Education: High school equivalent
    Pay: 45k

Night work for a year was hell and a recruiter got in touch, I took a chance - no more night shifts and more money :)

    Title: NOC
    Hour/wk: 40/week - 4 on-3 off
    Description: Monitoring about 3000 devices
    Company size: 2000
    Age: 32
    Duration: 11 months
How: Approached by a recruiter on linkedin
    Certs: A+/Network+/CCNA/JNCIA/ITIL-F/Linux+
    Education: High school equivalent
    Pay: 57k

While night work was gone, even irregular shift work was taking it's toll and there was no option for mon-fri so I started looking for a job in a very small company which would get me exposure to a lot of technologies while being fun also.

    Title: Operations Engineer
    Hour/wk: 40/week
    Description: AWS, scripting, monitoring, chef
    Company size: 200
    Age: 33
    Duration: Present
How: Applied directly having searched for smaller company as I wanted a lot of exposure to different things. Rigorous interview process but got through it.
    Certs: A+/Network+/CCNA/JNCIA/ITIL-F/Linux+
    Education: High school equivalent
    Pay: 65-70k

New job is great, team is great, work is great. I have a lot *understatement* to learn but In excited about it.

ISSO is not really a big position; it's not like an executive officer like you're thinking.

    Ya,

Don't confuse ISSO with CISO. ISSO is mainly a term that came out of the military to represent a general duty IS officer.

ISSO is essentially the infosec manager of a small network or of a network/site that is part of a larger enterprise network. The title mainly designates them as responsible for compliance with applicable security directives (NIST, DIACAP, DCID 6-3, DISA STIG, Service/Command policy, etc).

ISSO's work under the oversight of an ISSM or IAM (Info Assurance Mgr) who is the security manager of the enterprise network or subordinate networks within a command.
