Competitive workforce

I've been working at this company for about two+ years now, and many things are changing. They've started to hire more people, and many senior technicians/management have left. This has kind of left, a lot of the new people overworking and being very competitive with each other in hopes of making it to promotion and other specific goals in the workforce. I'm not too sure how to approach this situation any longer, as i have been here for quite some time, and am thinking of moving on to a senior role somewhere else. I'm one of the engineers on staff, however, i feel it is time to move on and find something better instead of dealing with many new tech's who are "trying" to make it.

Hi there!

Well. Think about it this way first thing first you look like you've made up your mind which is good!

As for human nature think about it. Opportunities have opened up and people see a chance to accelerate their career and fill that role so they are working to achieve it. You can't hold it against them for trying to get a better position.

Yep, when people here push for new jobs and promotions we all applaud them, you're just seeing it from the other side.

Yes, moving to a more Sr role elsewhere sounds great, progression is a good thing. Good luck!

Why do you not want to pursue a better role where you are at? If you have 2+ years at the company you are more then likely qualified for the new role VS a new tech the just got hired. IMO

Will you not "try to make it" at a different company also? I dont get the point of this thread, do you have something against people who try to prove or better themselves by moving up to higher roles or something?

Kind of at a loss here myself, the whole point in working, gaining experience and pursuing certs is to move up the ladder. No one joins a company to stay at the same role for life.

The workforce is always going to be competitive. IMO Why leave where you are just because new people want to move up... You can move up where you are and school the younger people on how to get where you are. Each one teach one. I have learned its better sometimes to stay where you are ESPECIALLY if people are leaving... that means more jobs for you and others with more exp can scoop those jobs up... and the new people can learn from YOU and others how to get into higher positions.

You'd be surprised. I knew lots of people who were just satisfied doing helpdesk/desktop support for 30+ years. It scares them to have any more responsibility.

When a lot of people are trying to move up at once, I can see it getting ugly and annoying pretty quickly. Once the team is settled in and everyone is doing what they have to do, the team would be more smooth, I would think. OP probably doesn't want to deal with all of the drama that can come into a workplace that has had a big upheaval of many folks all at once.

I know a lot of people that have. They are very content with their company and they are paid fairly and are satisfied with their work life balance.
So they have been there 8, 10, if not more years.

Also depends on the age. A lot of people I know in their 50s want a place to ride out until they can retire. Younger people hop to build their careers.

I think the OP might be feeling threatened by these new people coming in. He might be a senior in the company but others might have more knowledge in the area he specializes, this lets him to beleive that the other people are being competitive and he doesnt like that his "senior" title is being questioned.
Ive seen this before in my previous role where the new guys knew more than some of the people that were in the company for 10 years. The new guys being certified or having worked in various companies had broader knowledge of their field, whereas the person that was in the company for 10 years even though they had a "senior" title, they only knew things based on their 10 year tenure with the same company. So naturally they felt threatened when the new guys started making suggestions on improving things. In the end, the new guys didn't want to bother with the politics the senior techs had so they left for other companies with more pay that valued their suggestions.

If you wish to move on..do it. However, there will always be competition in the workplace..relish in it, because you can learn from it.
