Won't quite work because the two sticks making the X would need to be sqrt(2) longer than the 4 side sticks. I'm pretty sure they assume all the match sticks to be the same length (although not sure). And then, even if they were longer, as you said, you'd have isosceles triangles instead of equilateral.

But there is a way to do. I'll post the solution if you like.

Wouldn't you just snap them all in half? That'd give you 12 equal pieces and the exact amount needed for 4 triangles

Yeah, that would work, as long as you're allowed to break the sticks. Not sure if you are (this interview was quite a while back for me so I don't remember exactly the parameters). But there's also a way to do it without breaking the sticks.

There is at least 3 ways to do it I've seen. 2 with overlapping and 1 with going 3D. There are probably more...

Interview question: "What makes you cry"

Answer in my head: "This boring drawn out interview.

"what song sums up your work ethic? You will not get the role if you don't sing it"

I got the job but the company was even weirder to work for than it seemed.

Good experience of how to work with sociopaths mind you LOL.

This is the song that doesn't end,
It goes on and on my friend,
Some people started singing it not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it forever just because...

My sister used to sing that with her friends.

Any time a job description contains the words "fast paced environment", I know it is not a job for me. I spent 4 years in Desktop Support, and fast paced was never a part of our work ethic.

Two routes diverged in a table,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one packet, soon as I was able
    Contemplated which was more stable
    Or where administrative distance had least growth;

I shall be telling this through a switch
    Out some port, milliseconds hence:
Two routes diverged in a table, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
Because load balance makes all the difference.

If you could choose how to be tortured, what would you go for? (A: psychological)

If UFO's came to earth, and offered you immortality in return for 5 years in conflict would you go and why? (A: Yes, and Immortality speaks for it's self)

I guess employers have to ask these really dumb question to weed out those who are dumping interviews.
