Free IT/Cyber Security Training for Gov't Employees and Vets

Someone made me aware of this in another section of these forums. However it looks to be pretty useful as another training resource if you are a gov't employee or veteran.

If you are a veteran and don't have a .mil address you can still request access. After they verify your status they will grant access.

My Safari Books subscription expired lol. I hadn't accessed it in 90 days.

But the customer service was remarkable in getting me another account. Safari is a money benny to have as an IT practitioner in the Federal Government.

In the past I completed the HBSS (talk about 32 hours of boring), Windows OS Security, and Linux OS Security courses. They're OK, but not worth it in terms of learning essential items. From what I understand FedVTE was created to help people satisfy CEUs.

Safari Books content is much better alternative for learning. Someone posted the DoD/Contractor link last year and I've been using it ever since.

    Things to note:

The contract with the DoD and Safari Books has been extended to 2020.

The O'reilly learning paths valued at almost $150+ per course are excellent learning resources.

    PearsonVue Live Lessons are gold

I think I've used/studied over $1,000 of study material for free.

I would like to add that Skillsoft is available for Department of Defense Servicemembers and civilians at the following sites:

    Air Force https://usafprod.skillport.com (CAC Required)
    Army https://usarmy.skillport.com
    Navy/Marines https://navycswf.skillport.com
    Coast Guard https://cgportal.uscg.mil/delivery/Satellite/uscg

The training includes Security, but goes into other IT disciplines and self help topics too.

Not sure if contractors can use these.

So to add to the Safari books thing... I am currently at Florida Institute of Technology in the MSCIS program. After wasting money renting my book from a company I checked to see if my college book was in the Safari library. It was and I found out most of my books are. Free college books! Just keeps getting better.

Does anyone note the courses completed on their resume? Maybe with a note saying 'Not certified'? Seems they should hold some weight and be noted but how?

If you have no work experience, you could slide them on, to show that you've been studying some things, I suppose.... But even then it seems a bit of a stretch.

On the plus side, having those keywords in there might get your resume to a real life human. On the minus side, that human might think it was pointless and dismiss your otherwise qualified application. I personally wouldn't give it any consideration either way if I saw it on a resume. I've seen plenty of people clicking "next" through this training without actually watching/reading them.
