If the DNS server can’t find an answer for a DNS query from the information in its own zones - or from its conditional, delegated or stub zones – where does it try to get the answer from, and where is this configured?

It will look in the Root Hints. This can be found under the Root Hints tab of the DNS Server Properties in DNS Manager. Open DNS Manager and right-click on the server you want to manage in the tree on the left and choose Properties. You will need to click the Forwarders Tab and check "Use Root Hints If No Forwarders Are Available". If you haven't configured any forwarders the box will be grayed out and it will use Root Hints by default.All the best,

It will look at Forward DNS in DNS at the root of the DNS server right click and see forwards or will do root hints.CCNA, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, MCDST, MCITP Enterprise Administrator, Working towards Networking BS. CCNP is Next.
