Need help deciding if to leave my company

Hey guys I need a little advice here, currently I am a network engineer employed with a ISP/carrier that provides a multitude of services (SDH/DWDM/broadband and business solutions) at the moment I deal mainly on SDH/DWDM my day to day duties do not include routing, switching or network security (I have been giving some of these as projects, however it is only minor)

At the moment I am the only IP guy on the 5 man team (rest of them are transport engineers DWDM/SDH guys) I feel so out of place also I feel that I am slowly becoming the weakest guy on the team as most of my job day to day duties are not IP networking related, and I am constantly forcing myself to learn a tech that I am not interested in at all. So far the company is growing and I have applied for more IP roles within the company, however all attempts are either we have no budget or the role has been back filled already.

So far I have interviewed at a competitor and it seems that they want me to come over for a IP network engineer role. I also have an interview for a IP transport role in my own company, however after hearing so many disappointing stuff from my HR department, my expectations are low.

Thanks for reading

Sounds like you have minor issues with your current job and only dislike the lack of mobility in your company. Perhaps getting the IP transport role would be perfect for you, since you'd theoretically be removing your only two problems with your job.

If there's more to dislike about your job and the company you work for, perhaps then look for a new home. Switching jobs can bring bigger problems that you have now, or could be unexpectedly amazing.

Personally, if I were in that role for more than 2 years, I would be looking for a new role, preferably in the same company, in order to continue advancing.

You have the luxury of currently being employed which affords you patience in regards to the job market. Keep an eye on what's out there and if there is an opportunity that is too great to pass up than you jump. It's really that simple.

If you find an opportunity to progress your career, I say take it. Consider whether a new job offers more access to different technology, responsibilities, money, etc. If you aren't happy now, then I would definitely consider making a jump.
