One Man Show

Anyone have any experience being the one guy for a medium sized business?

My supervisor is quitting and he was also their compliance officer, so that leaves just me to manage all Security and their entire infrastructure until they hire someone else. I'm a bit intimidated so I'm curious if anyone else has gone through this. I will definitely need to hire another guy to do what I do, so I wouldn't be opposed to hiring a fellow TE member.

True. But I would want to see the look on his face when he realizes that he wasn't the one on control. He may assume so with all the yelling, dressing down, etc. But when he can look at him and let him know that he is done effective immediately and quitting. I could see a Michael Scott moment where he yells at him and says you can't quit because you're fired .

So...being a man involves having a non-productive confrontation with some one just for the sole reason of making that person angry and observing that anger for your personal satisfaction?

Yeah the look would be hiliarous.

I recommend, you type up couple professional resignations letters.
give to your supervisor and manager above that.
make sure you have list printed of equipment you may had and make sure you turn in to your supervisor.
expect that you may be immediately escorted out.
make sure you have copies for yourself. Keep a copy for future reference.

in no way, just send email and leave. It will make you look bad.

do it in person. Suck it up for the day. I do truly think you will be asked to immediately leave.
along with your resignation letter, inventory list and make note of events and write them down on way out the door.

if you get exit interview, don't bring up toxic environment. Just focus on better opportunity is why you are leaving.

THE WORLD of IT is a small place. You never know who knows who and when you may cross paths.
i recommend too, don't bad mouth old company or boss when you leave.

the bully boss may be great friends with someone in your new company,
and dirt talk will not make you look good. the TOXIC will follow up if you keep thinking about it.

a saying is if you point a finger, there will be 4 pointing back out you.

you sound young, so chalk this up to experience and move on.
i recommend going and doing something FUN and relax before new job and maybe have FUN the next weekend too!!!! time HEALS!

Every single time I have quit a job, whether I loved the job and the people I worked with, or did not enjoy or like them whatsoever, I did it in person. There was never any "Non-Productive confrontation". You make it sound as if I'm trying to start a fight, which I was not. I was being a professional ADULT, not a scared lil child who doesn't know how to be a professional.

If the person you are quitting to gets angry, that is totally on them and not on me. I will not let their reaction affect my attitude or anything of that matter. If I didn't like the guy/gal and I see him/her openly upset and caught off guard I'll just internally enjoy that moment because I did not react the way that they wanted or gave them any sort of satisfaction in my decision to leave.

And it is a productive meeting. You are giving your notice. I'd also have my resignation letter drafted in my email box and send it to him/hr on my way out of the office or if I had a great relationship with them after I got back to my desk. I may have worded my response poorly but that was more or less due to what Markulous has been through himself at his current employer. Emailing and leaving without really saying anything to anyone in person isn't professional. I can understand if your boss is not physically present that you cannot do it in person, but in that case I'd at the least give them a phone call. In the end I'm still a professional and not a 25 year old guy who has never been in a situation like that. I've had horrible bosses where they rode me hard, worked me 80+ hours per week for 30k a year, and then still treated me horribly. It wasn't a shock when I gave him a phone call as he was boarding an airplane that I quit and he had 1 hour to get someone to cover me because I was done. That was back when I was 25 and before I broke into IT. But, I wouldn't have done it any other way because of how I was treated. Later on I got a nice settlement due to their OT policies as it was a class action lawsuit.

The more I think about it the more I'm apt to just tell them in person after I send them an email. If the owner gets too wild I can just leave, but like you said that's on them if they react that way. At least then there's no question that I took anything or did anything sketchy before I left. I can turn in my keys directly to them, etc.

Well after I got laid into by the HR lady today, I'm calling today my last day. We can't get our checks until about 35 minutes until now, so I'll grab my check and give HR my resignation and call it a day.

I took off a couple hours early on Friday because I had a flight. My boss was cool with it a few months ago.

Well that was uneventful. HR lady tells me to shut the door when I go to get my check and she was mad about that. I tell her I quit and she says "I think that's a good decision". Gets up, then opens the door. I put my resignation and keys on her desk and ask if there's anything I need to sign, she says no and walks off. And that's that.

I have no dubt that in the future that Windows XP machine that controls the Telephone system will fail. You tried to warn them and they did not listen. Good luck on your new job. As far as how you left, In my opinion it went better then I expected. I was waiting for you to say the owner was going to lay into you and then have you thrown out due to his temper. Let's know how things go at the new shop !

I thought for sure she'd call him down there but she wanted me gone clearly. I forgot to mention she saw my employment verification form that was sent to her so I'm sure that was a factor

Oh so she already knew you where leaving when she called you into her office.
So i dunno with that info if she was going to fire you. Unless they thought you where going to do something destructive I don't see why they would fire you on your way out and create more paper work and open them selves up to lawsuits etc...

So you got permission to leave early for your flight and then they had a problem with it? Did she know about the employment verification form at that point?

That's a good question. I have no idea if she had it or not. She's always been pretty moody.

A notice of about 60 seconds. I straight up quit once I got my paycheck. I didn't see any reason to work today when they were being crappy and I start my new job Monday
