Any SANS coupons?

PhateonPhateon Member Posts: 14 ■□□□□□□□□□
I did a GPEN 5 years ago, but did not care renewing the cert. At that time the self-study course was $900 and I got a $150 off of a ethicalhacker.net discount code. Now, I'm planning to get a GWAPT - self-study again. The course is $1149 and my company wont pay for this.

Does anyone know of any coupon codes that work to get me a discount? Does any one know if these so called SANS coupons really work?

Thanks! But the problem with such courses is that they are not well known and companies hardly would pay any attention to you even if you have them.

It depends on if you're going for ROI or the knowledge. If it is your current employer, I'm sure you can show them the syllabus and it might change their mind.

Nope...no coupons. However if you pass it, you may be able to claim it on your taxes. There's a form somewhere that you can get a tax credit for courses, professional fees, and CE credits you pay out of pocket that directly relate to your job. So if you do web application pen testing as a part of your job, then you should be able to claim it.

I think the only real way you could get a credit is if your testing experience was legit bad one. But in that case, it's very rare.

Thanks a lot! Just the kind of information I was looking for. I will find it and I will file it! icon_razz.gif

    There are OnDemand specials: https://www.sans.org/ondemand/specials

Not sure how you were able to get it for so cheap 5 years ago.

Yep. I know about them. At $4885, this surely is out of my budget. As far as how I got it for lesser 5 years ago, I opted the self-study track. Prices are available here - https://www.giac.org/registration/cert-attempt

Was that self-study you got back then only books or did it include any online component?

PDF's were included. Nothing more and a single proctored exam attempt.

They are always looking for people to help setup, pass out materials etc at the SANS events and you are able to sit the courses at a pretty nice discount. A person I used to work with likes to do it that way. They might give you a test sitting as part of this deal but I'm not 100% sure. I know they mention it on their website but I don't think they give a lot of details.

It's called the Work Study Program. I've done my 5 SANS classes this way. Currently is $1,100 and you get the live class, MP3s, the OnDemand class for a few months, and one attempt at the cert. Best deal ever.

The price is going up to $5,950 in December for all 6 day courses, $4,885 looks like a bargain.

I'm assuming he means Work Study.
  • KalabasterKalabaster Member Posts: 86 ■■□□□□□□□□
That's what I thought at first but I don't see that change anywhere on their site and I just registered for a workstudy this Wednesday, same price (1,100)

Is your Work Study this year? I have a feeling this may kick in 1/1/2017.
  • KalabasterKalabaster Member Posts: 86 ■■□□□□□□□□
Yeah it is, it's for this month. It sucks if they do raise it. I definitely don't see anything anywhere about a price hike for it.

Wow...I did work study in March and it was $900. That would be two quick price hikes for the work study program.

I have to assume he was talking about the exams which are $1249 and they were $1149 earlier this year
  • KalabasterKalabaster Member Posts: 86 ■■□□□□□□□□
That makes a lot more sense
