Etherchannel - channel group numbering

Hi, I'd like some extra thought on something I read in Odoms ICND2 v3 material.

"Step 1. Add the channel-group number mode on command in interface configuration
mode under each physical interface that should be in the channel to add it to
the channel.

Step 2. Use the same number for all commands on the same switch, but the channelgroup
number on the neighboring switch can differ."

From what I understand the "channel-group" command will create a virtual port-channel interface, but using the same number for all commands on the same switch would result in Switch1 having the Po1 physical interfaces split between Switch0 and Switch2. Only Po1 appears in the MAC table so I'm assuming the frames will be set out somewhat randomly depending on the load balancing algorithm.

Should I be configuring a unique channel-group number for each pair of links instead?

Yes, a unique channel-group number for each pair of links.
You can use same group number for interfaces going to different switches when using switch stacking where two different switches act as one.
